NYC theatre suggestions?
We'll be in NY for 6 nights in May and have tickets to Glengary Glen Ross so far (hope it's good!). In addition, I was thinking of seeing Avenue Q, Fiddler on the Roof, and doing the TKTS booth for Phantom (dh has never seen it...). Any other ideas for a 'must see'? I think 4 nights of theatre is plenty, but would consider swapping one of the above ideas (except Glen..since we have tix)or possibly adding a fifth night (although my hunch is that it's just 'too much' theatre) for good enough reason. I know Spamalot and Wicked are hot right now - but honestly, they don't intrigue me much so far. Ideas/thoughts/advice anyone?

Are you only interested in musicals
other than Glengary? If drama is your cup of team I can recommend McReele if still running. On my wish list is 'Streetcar...' w/Natasha Richardson, On Golden Pond w/James Earl Jones & Glass Menagerie w/Jessica Lange. |
I personally can't imagine such a thing as "too much theatre", but that's just me.
Rhea's suggestions are all good ones. I know that regular theatre expert here, Howard (who is away on vacation) just saw Glass Menagerie and thought it was wonderful. I'm trying to picture (or hear) those amazing golden voiced tones of James Earl Jones in On Golden Pond, and can't quite imagine how his usual voice wouldn't overpower the simplicity of that role and that show -- but maybe again, that's just me. I think you original ideas are good ones, especially if you want to incorporate musicals. And to be honest, as old as Phantom is, if your husband has never seen it, I think you should. While I enjoyed Avenue Q and thought it was cute and fun, I wouldn't put it in the "must see" category. |
Patrick, I agree that there really isn't such a thing as 'too much theatre', but I'm a little concerned about trying to cram too much into our short trip. I'm not sure if it's smart to plan on going to the theatre on the evening of our arrival.
I think we really need about a month, and then maybe we could fit everything in. Rhea - Thank you for the suggestions. |
I suggest getting Hairspray tickets at TKTS. I don't know how good Fiddler on the Roof is since Alfred Molina left.

I'd rather see Harvey Fierstein do Fiddler than Alfred Molina anyway!
