NYC Theatre - Broadway or Off BW
I'm trying to be economical and use some discounts from Playbill.com for my next visit to NYC in May. Looking for something for myself and 18 year old DD. I thought about Altar Boyz, or perhaps something else off Broadway? Or one of the discounted shows on Broadway:
33 Variations 9 to 5 August: Osage County Avenue Q Blithe Spirit Chicago Desire Under the Elms Exit the King God of Carnage Guys and Dolls Hair Impressionism Irena's Vow Mary Stuart Next to Normal Reasons To Be Pretty Rock of Ages The 39 Steps The Norman Conquests The Phantom of the Opera The Philanthropist Waiting for Godot Any thoughts? |
It depends what you and dd like.
Chicago - around a long time, but a great musical Blithe Spirit - Noel coward done beautifully. Angela Lansbury and cast are wonderful. Impressionism - not a play with a lot of 'depth,' but I enjoyed it. Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen are both good. August: Osage County - great drama with occasional levity - long performance. Avenue Q - clever and different Phantom - a classic Irena's Vow - saw it off Broadway - good, true story - wouldn't be a top rec for a visitor. Are you only seeing one play? I would stick to Broadway - there are some very good choices. |
Another place to check out discounts is broadwaybox.com. I agree go with a Broadway show. Of ur list I would say Chicago or Phantom, as they are classics and real Broadway experiences for visitors. If were me, I'd wait and hit the tkts booth and go see more than one show.

I would axe Reasons to be Pretty from the list. While NYTimes
gave LaBute glowing reviews, the constant & sophomoric cursing was tedious. |
I saw Guys and Dolls with my 23-year-old daughter last weekend and it was fun for both of us. I also support vabarone's advice to see a classic, such as Phantom.
|
The 39 Steps is very entertaining - have you seen any of the "Tuna Texas" shows? It's a similar format.

Thanx so much. I was leaning toward Chicago and Phantom. I may narrow it down and let DD help me pick.
I've liked all the plays I've seen - Hairspray (original cast), Mama Mia, Lion King, COlor Purple, Wicked. While I loved the movie, Mama Mia was my least fave play of all. Not sure why. |
