NYC - Tenement Museum
 

I'll be in New York with my wife the very end of May.
I looked at the Tenement Museum web site.
It appears there are many options for tours.

1) Of the building
2) Of the neighborhood
And options within.

Is there one main tour and the rest are just add-on tours that you can purchase if you have nothing better to do?
Or do you really have to make choices?

You really do have to make choices since every tour is different. There is not really a "main" tour.

Is there one that's any more popular than the others and for what reason?

We will be in NY next week
We have toured LES Tenement museum 3 times with a different tour each.
Our favorite is the one which focus on the garment work of the irish and/or jew emigrant.
But all were terrific.
To do all in one day or one sejour is too much i think.
What we liked
-morning in Ellis Island but I don't know if it has reopened
Then LES tenement museum-you gave to reserve it .
And then touring in the neighborough finishing in Little Italy but only a few blocks now and Chinatown.
If clear day Southstreatsea port for a drink and a diner at Bridge Cafe.
Almost a whole day of a recent migrant...

Hi Erik,
We were in New York 2007 & 2008 as part of trips to Philadelphia & Boston.

We did go down to the Lower East Side and had some lunch at Katz's Deli and we wandered around. But didn't go to the Tenement Museum.

We wandered Little Italy and Chinatown and ate once in each (one each year).

I'll look at the tour that you suggest and see if it interests my wife.

As I wrote above we'll be in NYC the very end of May.
I'm taking my daughter and granddaughter to Yellowstone and GTNP in late July.

Some museums-poison at natural history, some Audubon at NY hist society, some nice expo at the museum of the city but also museum at FIT, international center of photo(Capa in colors) and design(fashion jewelry)
A game of the Nets
Perhaps NHL-depend of the schedule
Jane Monheit at Birdland
Cabaret, bridges of Madison and Kinky boots for musicals
Billy Joel at MSG
And some good restaurants
And as I am with Anny and our daughter...Shopping and shopping!!!
End May/early June 3,5 days in Chicago for conference on chemotherapy...

We did the building and thought it was great but that was the only tour so I cannot compare. It was winter so being inside was a factor. Will catch another tour this summer.

You've got quite a list.

We saw Billy Joel about 20 years ago. I don't know what it's like now but the completion was between him and the kids to see who could be louder.

Net? We have the Heat here.

NHL? I saw quite a few games when I was younger. Not recently.

I hope we're not anywhere long enough for that much sopping.

My wife has also mentioned Chicago for September

I called and they just told me to read the descriptions on their web site.

I've only been once so I can't compare, but we did the Hard Times tour and I really enjoyed it. It seemed to be the most general tour - several families/time points covered. But based on my experience I'd expect any of them to be well done.

The Heat ?
Is it not that team which had needed a Clevelander -Lebron James and a New Yorker as ditector-Pat Riley to even be the world champion...

The tenements are authentic, no a/c, so you need to be aware of that if it's hot out.

I'll read the various tours in detail.

I visited the Tenement Museum in November with my mom; we're both history buffs. I also visited in 2011 with DH and 14yo DS; we did the Irish Outsiders tour.

With my mom, we first took one of the neighborhood tours, Outside the Home, then did the Hard Times house tour.

It kind of depends on your interests and the time you have available - you may end up taking the tour(s) that fit your time schedule.

I really enjoyed the neighborhood tour, especially the information about American socialists. Some of the information, about the LES and its changes, I already knew, but she really brought it to life, by pointing out buildings, and talking about people, that were involved in the history of the time periods. But I wouldn't skip a house tour. I probably preferred the Hard Times tour over Irish Outsiders, because Hard Times covered several families. And on a personal note, my mother's great grandfather abandoned his family (in Nebraska), in much the same way as the Gumpertz family's father did.

I did the Hard Times tour also and thought it was great.

The Irish family tour (I think it is Moore?) was wonderful. I have been on 3 diff tours and that was my favorite.
