NYC Temperatures - next week
 

We will be in New York City April 7 - 11, 4 adults, 4 children ages almost 12 - 7. We are coming from Virginia and we plan to do the normal tourist things - museums, Yankees game, Central Park, Circle Line. We plan to walk and take the subway.

I have gone to the Weather Channel and I see that the temps will be in the 50s with 30% chance of rain...I have read that it seems colder because of the tall buildings and wind tunnels.

I really, really do not want to mess with heavy coats. Will we freeze to death if we have decent fleece jackets and long sleeved shirts?

I know everyone's crystal balls are in the shop - just trying to get an idea if we are totally crazy to leave the coats at home.

I think you will be cold. I've seen visitors all over town, freezing in sweatshirts.Fleece is better, but if it rains, and you don't have a decent outer layer, you'll be miserable. It doesn't have to be a real winter coat (but most people here are still wearing down jackets...)
Don't forget that temps go down after dark, and 50s during the day will be 40s or lower at night

I agree: with the wind and damp in they city, a layer of fleece needs another layer over it to block wind and rain. Even a windbreaker jacket makes a huge difference but a thin raincoat is even better. And bring a hat.

Dang it. You were supposed to say "you'll be fine!" it actually feels much, much warmer!"

If you don't want the heavier coat, bring a sweater that you can layer between your fleece and long-sleeved shirt.

Another option: a pair of gloves often makes you feel warmer if your coat isn't heavy enough.

The weather has been unusually cold for the past two weeks, and at this time of year it's always much more chilly at night as others have noted.

For the Yankees game, you really should be prepared for a chill. You will feel warm only for the time you are sitting directly in the sun. Otherwise, you'll be sitting still in the shade--chilly at this time of year. Walking in Central Park, you'll probably feel warmer because you are moving around.

Check the extended forcast right before you leave. They aren't necessarily the most accurate, but can give you some idea. April can be wet, warm, chilly, and on rare occasion it's even snowed (althought VERY unlikely).

Bring layers and umbrellas. Sitting at a baseball can get cold (especially if evening) so dress extra warm for that.

Windproof/waterproof outerwear would be better than just fleece.

If you plan to be out and about, it's best to dress for being comfortable, especially for that Yankees' game, or anytime you can't easily get away from the weather. The wind can be brutal and the buildings block the sun.

I always feel sorry for folks who look so miserable because they're just not dressed for the weather.

If it were me, I'd have my waterproof down coat with hood, scarf, hat, mittens...

We were in New York this time last year. IT was COLD. We wore thick jackets, scarves, and gloves. You should bring your heavy coats.

I think the weather was unusually cold when we were there but still it's better to be prepared for the cold weather.

Dress in layers is the best advice.

If I was going to the stadium I would:

Break out the polypropolene underwear (top and bottom..very lightweight)
Nice turtleneck
Fleece top
Shell/lined jacket
warm sox
Gloves
Ski hat.

Yes I did say stadium not slopes!

If Weather is cold, you are ready

If Weather is warm, you sit on the jacket. Hat and gloves in the pocket.

Jump up and down and when the Yankees get a hit!!

PS; This will work for the circle line as well!

If you did not follow my advice, and find that you are a wee bit cold...head over to "Paragon Sporting Goods" on 17th and Broadway and you can purchase enough to oufit a sherpa!!

ALso any Modell's store, you can pick up thermal underwear, sweatshirts, windbreakers, etc. very inexpensively if need be. They have location in TImes Sq, Herald Sq, and several other.

A fleece by itself will not be enough. If you aren;t going to bring a winter coat (and I'm not wearing mine any more - but a leather jacket), bring a waterproof outer layer, a couple of sweaters and long-sleeve shirts and tees. Also be sure to have sturdy umbrellas and comfy waterproof walking shoes.
