NYC taxi vs car service
 

I have used taxis exclusively from airport to midtown and vice versa. Is there any benefit to considering a car service?

It will be midafternoon on a Wednesday from Times Square hotel to JFK. Three people and 3 pieces of luggage plus carryon.

The price will be the same as long as you se a regular car service - Carmel or Dial 7 - versus a corporate service.

The benefit of a car service is that you walk out the door and it's there - you don;t have to look for a cab - which can be more or less difficult based on weather and traffic.

Look at the websites of these car services for a coupon - which will give you $6 or so off.

I used to use Carmel both ways - when the company was paying.

Now I use a taxi FROM the airport to the hotel/apartment.

I always use a Carmel car TO the airport. I agree that it's wonderful to know that the car will be waiting for you and that the ride is for an agreed upon price. On the last trip, I tried to book online but no car was available. I called and they were available at 2:55 (but not 3pm).

Funny story - the driver lived next door. He moved to NYC in the 80s and has lived in the same apartment, raising his family every since. I probably passed him and/or his kids several times on the street and never knew it.

If you book them in advance, car services are usually marginally less expensive than regular taxis from JFK (about the same price or a bit more TO JFK).

JFK is hit or miss with getting a taxi. One Sunday this summer I arrived at Terminal 4 and there was no line. The next time I had to wait over 20 minutes. But I find that it can be a bit chaotic to find a car at JFK. You may reserve in advance, but you have to call when you have picked up your bags and are ready to leave, and then you meet the car outside at the curb. Sometimes the wait for the car exceeds the wait time for a taxi.

I tend to do the same thing that Starrs does and use a car service TO the airport but a taxi FROM. If I take one (and I only do that about half the time), I always use a taxi to LGA unless it's a very early morning flight because a taxi is generally significantly cheaper than a car service there.

The advantage of a car support is that you stroll out the entrance and it's there you do not have to look for a cab.

Price varies if you hire a regular car service vs. a corporate one. Obviously, corporate car service are quite "pricey" since their car units are really good (comfortable, safe & fast)- limos, Mercedes, Cadillac, etc. Well, it still depends on you and your budget.

I would use car service to have peace of mind that the car is there for you at the booked time. I use Dial7 and most of their cars are comfortable town cars even when you book the cheapest car available.

Yellow cabs is NOT a company. All regular cabs in NYC are yellow - it's required by law. There are special light green cabs - but they can be hailed only uptown in Manhattan (above 96/110th street) and in the outer boroughs.

As for car services - there are dozens with Carmel and Dial 7 the largest for regular passengers. They have mostly Lincoln town cars versus luxury limos that are used for weddings and events etc at much higher prices. Have never heard of the companies listed on the above web site,

Your website says, "For trips between JFK International Airport and Manhattan, taxi fare is approximately USD 50." That's not really accurate. The fare is precisely $52.50, plus tip and tolls, for a total of ~$65-$70. Someone who read your website and expected to pay $50 would be sorely disappointed.
You don't mention the most commonly recommended car services.
I see nothing that would help someone avoid a scam.

I am a Manhattan resident and frequent traveler.

My general rule is to take a taxi both to/from LGA/JFK when arriving/departing during a NON-rush hour time.

I will schedule a car service (Dial7) when leaving/arriving during rush hour (or during holiday rush).
