NYC store window decorations
For years I've wanted to see the famous NYC decorations in storefronts. I'm finally coming this Thursday. Which stores in which locations are must-sees? I was thinking of 5th Avenue, or around Macy's but I'm not sure what street that is on.

Thanks. Can't wait to visit NY again.

Be sure to take a look at Barney's, Saks, Lord & Taylor, and Macy's (34th street at Herald Square) If you are visiting some of the popular tourists destinations you will be very handy to the large department stores for the famous windows (ex. if you are at Rockefeller Center, walk across the street to Saks)

Enjoy your visit!
|
Thanks, Rose. I will be at Radio City Music Hall. Glad to hear Saks is nearby Rockefeller Center. Are Barney's and Lord and taylor's around there, too?

You might get a map of Manhattan off the web or a guide book to take with you so you have an idea of where you are going. It's kind of easy to get a bit lost here, and it can be a bit confusing.

Macy's - 34th and Broadway
Lord&Taylor - 38th and 5th Ave.
Saks - 50th and 5th Ave.
You might want to walk up 5th Ave to see all the store windows, they are beautiful this year.

Bring some boots if you have them, we are supposed to have some rain/sleet/snow over the next couple of days. Oh and a very warm coat.

Have a great time.

Just back from my first trip to NYC during the holidays. Window decorations were quite unusual. Nothing traditional. Saks' display is the story of sleeping beauty. Another store had a Cher theme. "It's the season for Cher-ing", etc. Bizarre.
|
Macy's windows have a traditional theme - they show the story Miracle on 34th Street; definitely worth a visit.
|
Re the comments about wearing boots - did you get snow up there today? I hear tomorrow will be dry.

Thanks to all for your help. I have some good maps and books about what to do in New York. I just wanted opinions about which stores had displays worth seeing. I was thinking they'd still be traditional - at least Macy's is. Do they still draw large crowds?

Thanks again.
|
Yes, the windows are still drawing large crowds, but they are "roped off" so you can get in line to view up close without getting in the way of pedestrians (or run the risk of getting shuffled down the sideway!)

Rain is forecast for tomorrow (12/12) high of 42, low of 34. Wear something sensible on your feet, you don't need snow boots, but don't plan on walking around in "fancy" shoes; it will be wet, maybe a little slushy and you don't want to ruin your good things.

Have a wonderful time!

It rained REALLY hard here yesterday, and today is sunny and mild, and the slush and snow are GONE. Yay!
