NeoPatrick - Hi neighbor! I live in New Hope - Bucks County and saw Mothers & Sons and the Allergists Wife last summer both were great. We are blessed in this community love the BCPH.

traveler2005 - thanks again for your very detailed reviews. Sounds like you had a great trip.

Neo - Regarding Vanya. Have you read Chekhov? I have not. I don't think I enjoyed the play any less, but I wonder if there were lots of references that I didn't notice.

I know the main characters are named after Chekhov characters and just last night I realized the "uncle" reference was an "in joke."

Yes I know Checkov pretty well, and while I laughed alone out loud a few times, I don't think it was all that important. References to the cherry orchard ("not really an orchard, just some cherry trees" for example) jumped out pretty clearly.

FamilyThatTravels, I first heard of New Hope in college --a very long time ago-- when I was accepted as an Equity apprentice at the Playhouse, but I ended up doing that elsewhere with a resident company as Bucks was then bringing in package shows. I finally got there in the late 80s to see a show, my only trip there before moving up here three years ago. The reopening of the Playhouse is a great thing. So far I haven't missed any of their productions and have a subscription again this year.

DD and I saw a local theater production of Vanya, et al a few weeks ago and enjoyed it immensely!

And my compliments to traveler2005 for this most outstanding Broadway-based trip report! When DD and I spent a week in New York in May 2012 and saw four shows during that time, I thought we were doing pretty well, but this puts that to shame. Kudos!

Neo - I can't wait for Ain't Misbehavin" to come to the BCPH it is my favorite musical of all time....wish Nell Carter would come down from heaven to be there - she was a diva. Maybe I will see you there!

I am heading to NYC next week with printouts of discount codes in hand to buy tickets to 2 shows.. Thanks again for the discount code tip, traveler2005.

Since there are so many theater goers on this tread, I hope you won't mind if I ask you and them your opinion of Motown The Musical compared to Jersey Boys. I can't decide which of the two see. (The other show I will be trying to get tickets for is Beautiful).

NeoPatrick Apr 9th, 2014 01:34 PM

I'll admit I haven't seen Motown, the Musical despite loving Motown music. Impressions from trusted theatre going friends have been very negative. Lame attempt at a story, weak acting, and some pretty mediocre "impressions". Jersey Boys is not a huge favorite of mine but it is very well done, at least. Of the three you mention, I'd say Beautiful is the best!

traveler2005 Apr 10th, 2014 04:14 PM

I haven't seen Motown, so can't speak for it. I loved both Jersey Boys and Beautiful. Jersey Boys was a little depressing. Do you have a preference as to type of music you enjoy? That might be a factor in your decision.

Thank you musicfan. It was a trick to get there early enough to see the Sunday matinee and stay late enough to see the Thursday evening performance before starting to drive home, but I wouldn't leave out any of the shows that we saw.

I don't even like Broadway plays, musical or otherwise, but totally enjoyed this trip report.

I love the planning process and use very similar spreadsheet strategies when visiting multiple exhibitions and art museums. I couldn't do a week in Paris without a grid plan.

Thank you tusccanlifeedit - I always say that different people like different things.

I love travel - and the planning is half the fun.
