NYC - Sargent - Sorolla

I plan to visit NYC from 8-12 September. My itinerary musts are the Met to see the Sargent exhibit and the Hispanic Society to see the Sorolla murals. Seeing "Avenue Q" or "Kinky Boots" are possibilities. Haven't seen the Guggenheim or the Whitney yet either.

Since I have only 3 full days, I'm not sure of times yet. However, meeting for drinks or dinner ought to be do-able.

Soooo, if you want to meet, please let me know.

So far, I have $52 each way Amtrak tickets and $145/night single room at Park Savoy. DH and I had many inexpensive meals at La Parisienne on 7th Ave. but it may be closed now.

PS-Here is link for Park Savoy: http://www.parksavoyny.com/

Its location is sweet at 158 W 58th St, but it has no amenities.

La Parisienne closed in February 2015.

Thanks nycguy. Did you know the guy who ran it by any chance? He was a bit of a character and not young.

nycguy10002 Jul 30th, 2015 03:07 PM

No, I didn't know the guy who ran it.

Hope you have a great time, TDudette. I'm there a week ahead of you and am also looking forward to the Sargent exhibit.

Park Savoy surely has an A+ location!

We're in NYC now. Checked out the new Whitney and was very surprised to like it so much. I never cared for the old,Whitney so had low expectations. I was with a few people and everyone liked it.

Thanks TDudette and Yestravel for the leads....both will help in planning my coming trip to NYC with old friends.

TDudette Aug 1st, 2015 10:32 AM

Good to hear about the Whitney, yestravel.

And lantana and Marnie, do be aware that Park Savoy is seriously basic. DH and I stayed there 2 times and found our room and bath to be very clean but small. There may have been a basket of tourist brochures at the front desk but that is all.

Agree that the Whitney is a cool new space in the Meatpacking district. Lots of outdoor terraces and great views of the city and the Hudson River. If you like Mexican food, Dos Caminos has a great outdoor seating area and is only a short walk from the Whitney. The food is good too.

We were at the Met yesterday and really enjoyed the Sargent exhibition, it's very extensive and allow at least 90 minutes to view it thoroughly. Enjoy the city.

Thanks for the info, Frank!

The Sargent exhibit at the Met is exquisite. It is overwhelming how many portraits there are but they are cohesively presented and it was easy to consume. I loved it and would return again if we are there while it's still on. It took us close to 2 hours to get through it all, which is long for us!

The Hispanic Society is a somewhat hidden gem, a bit of a pain to get to from midtown, but very well worth it, even beyond the Sorolla murals!

TDudette Aug 10th, 2015 12:38 PM

Thanks, amyb. Can't wait. I bought a Met ticket online--do they have timed entries for the Sargents?

I may just taxi to Hispanic and bus or subway back.OTOH, DH and I walked from Chelsea to 158th Street one time--those short blocks are very do-able.

santamonica Aug 10th, 2015 12:56 PM

The park savoy might be a step up from the bunk beds at hotel jane in Chelsea where we've stayed.

TDudette, there is no timed entry at the Met for Sargent, at least not on the Saturday I was there. It wasn't too bad though crowd-wise.

There is a new Sargent exhibit at MFA Boston too if you're in the area. I've not been yet, but I think it just opened. It's not as expansive as what's at the Met, but more for true Sargent fans interested in the inner workings of his craft. Letters, photos, sketches, watercolors, etc. Here until November. http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/yours...john-s-sargent

OMG, amyb. I haven't looked at the curator's section but this is amazing. I've been reading about him and Mrs. Gardiner. Just an increddible talent.

I don't know, santa--at least you have a real foyer!

Hi TDUDETTE,

Sounds like a great little trip to New York. And that hotel looks reasonable and convenient.

Good for you continuing to explore Sargent. The MFA in Boston had a similar exhibit in 2013 which they called JOHN SINGER SARGENT WATERCOLORS - used the same portrait of the woman in the large veiled hat which was highlighted in the Met exhibit.

AMYB gives a very good description above of the current Sargent exhibit in Boston which I have not seen either.

I will be following along...

TDudette Aug 30th, 2015 07:02 AM

Hi latedaytraveler. There was a big Sargent exhibit in DC some years ago that hooked me on him. His watercolors were a wonderful surprise. As was the artist Sorolla.

I called the Savoy and confirmed my reservations.

The next thing on my radar is tea at the Russian Tea Room. Anyone done that? It looks like a splurge.

Frank Aug 30th, 2015 08:30 AM

At the Russian Tea Room, you can go for a 3 course pre or post theater dinner for not much more than tea.

TDudette Aug 30th, 2015 09:22 AM

Thanks, Frank. Good to know.
