NYC Safety?

My husband, 3 small kids, and I are going to NYC the end of May. We have not been there for years; what places should we avoid?
We are planning to hit the Museum of Nat'l HIstory, and the Fine arts; Rockefeller Ctr, etc - all the touristy stuff we can. We don't plan to be out too much at night; little ones will prevent that.
Any suggestions will be appreciated....
thanks!!!!

If you are staying in Manhattan, safety is not really an issue. None of the places you mention are in dodgy locations.

The biggest safety concern (in my opinion) would be to ensure that you are holding your kids' hands at all times when you are walking on the streets. While I have (thankfully) never experienced a mugging or anything like that, I have seen too many pedestrians (all careless adults, but still) hit by cars. (Usually the pedestrians stand a good ways into the street and not on the sidewalk while waiting for a light to turn.)

Agree NYC is very very safe. Only issues are accidents caused by carelessness. Don't leave your handbag unattended on a chair. Are you bringing a collapsilbe stroller for the 3 yr old? Your biggest problem will be the kids complaining about walking and their feet hurting. Take lots of rest stops. Don't know which mus. you mean by the "fine arts" but don't make the trip too "museumy" so the kids don't have fun. Assuming good weather, spend lots of time in the park. The3 yr old will like the carousel. The zoo in Central Park is great. The butterfly exhibit at the Nat. Hist. mus. might be fun too.

Check out gocitykids.com for any special things going on while you're here. Make sure to take them to Toys R Us in Times Square (inside ferris wheel). The New Victory theater has shows just for kids. Might check what's playing.

Tourist areas of NYC are all perfectly safe as long as you behave normally (don;t wander down dark alleys alone at 3am). And public tranport is fine even late - we take it after the theater all the time if we have too much trouble getting a cab.

You don;t mention the age of the kids - but hanging onto their hands - or even using that leash thing if you have a toddler - is really important - since they're probably not used to crowds.

Thanks everyone - that's pretty much what I've been reading, but I wanted to make sure...
