hmmm...........
former nyc resident.....
Exactly how long a go did you live here?
Lowest forms of life ride the subway????
Everyone from executives to school kids ride the NYC Subway.
I have been taking the subway since I was in "High School" (A VERY long time ago) I have never had a problem and very rarely have seen anything bad happen. For 5 years in the late 80's early 90's I took the subway from western Queens to Harlem to be to work at 4AM. Yep, and never a problem. That was with two subway changes. And I walked the last ten blocks on nice days rather than wait for the #3 Shuttle.
You need to come back and see us.

Just to echo Anthony's point about the safety of NY as compared to other cities... go to this site that compares FBI crime statistics of cities in the US.
http://www.morganquitno.com/cit02dang.htm

As you can see, NYC is nowhere near the top of the list of "dangerous" places. In fact, it may take you a while to scroll down and find it (it's # 133).
Statistically, you're more likely to be a crime victim in places like Glendale AZ, Raleigh NC, Toledo OH (and 132 others) than in NYC. I'll bet that comes as a surprise to most people.

No one visiting NYC should be afraid if they wouldn't be similarly fearful of those 132 other cities/towns on the list. Just use common sense as you would everywhere. No, I personally wouldn't ride the subway alone at 4am (even though chances are that nothing would happen) just as I wouldn't wander alone through the parking lot of a small-town mall at 4am.

I visited NYC last July and I have to say that I felt absolutly safe always, at all hours. Our last night there we stayed out until at least 3:00 AM and there were tons of people around still! Mind you this was in crowded Times Square but even in other areas like Soho we felt safe using the subway and walking around after dark because there were so many people out and about. I wouldn't go through Central Park at night if you paid me because that is one big dark piece of real estate at night....also the financial district (wall street etc.) emptied out quick apres 6:00 but other than that I felt really safe. Safer than London, Paris, Sydney, Seattle, Toronto and definately safer than my hometown city, Vancouver.

I found that post about feeling unsafe in Chelsea so funny. I've lived in Chelsea for 15 years now (10 of those as a single woman)& have never felt unsafe here. :)

Btw, that Sex And The City scene wasn't set in Chelsea anyway. I think it was Soho. Not that a scene in a tv show means anything anyway. :)
