NYC-Restaurants in Theatre District
 

Taking a trip to NYC in September and staying at the Belvedere Hotel(48th St). I hear the restaurants in midtown are geared toward tourists and are pricier. Is that so? Can you recommend some restaurants in that area?

Does no one do any research on this board anymore?

Stay away from most of the ones right at Times Square and along 7th/Broadway in that area and you'll probably do better value wise.

Along 8th and 9th Avenues between 42 and about 50th are a ton of good, various, well priced restaurants.
Two that were pretty new to me that I really liked last time happen to be "sister restaurants" Maria Pia on 51st between 8th and 9th, and Roberto Passon on 9th at 50th.

There's a pretty "garden" restaurant called Luxia which I believe is right next to your hotel.

bsam, for someone who's asking for help, you've sure adapted the wrong attitude! Sorry, but I don't have time to give you any advice.

We enjoyed a pre-theater dinner at Pergola des Artistes at 252 West 46th St. They are closed Sunday and Monday. It was quite reasonable, and nicely done. The service was terrific. Casual dress. Not a "foodie" experience, but it was quite nice.

Ya know, I realized after the fact that I planned an entire trip to Paris and France by just reading the wonderful input on this board. Had no idea until a year later that I didn't post a single question.

Good to know that bsam's time is too important to do a bit of reading. Takes all of 4 seconds to type in the search box. Geez, wonder when I'll be so important I don't have that kind of time for trivial stuff.

Obviously, I won't be sharing my favorite pre-theater restaurant on this particular thread.

Also check menupages.com, you can search by location and type of cuisine. There are many touristy-oriented places, but there are some good deals at decent restaurants as well. The restaurants closer to Broadway and 7th Av tend to be more touristy whereas, once you get closer to 8th and 9th av, there's more options.

Some restaurants that come to mind are Cascina and BASilica (this has an excellent prix fixe special), both on 9th Av in the mid-40s. ALso West Bank Cafe, Le Madeleine comes to mind. There are many more.

For a real bargain and quaint (for NYC)atmosphere try Hourglass Tavern down restaurant row.

You have to give a little to get a little. I think the problem stemmed from your apppearing not to want to give a little of YOUR time, but wanted to have some of ours.

Try Delta Grill at 48th & 9th. Great Canjun food and not overpriced.

Ninth Ave in the 40s and 50s is far enough from Times Square to not have the low quality, high priced cuisine typical of tourist areas. And there's a ton of different ethnic (and non-ethnic) foods to choose from.

Stayed at the Belvedere last month. For a quick, inexpensive but good breakfast, there is a diner right around the corner on 8th. Turn left out of the hotel, walk to 8th, then left.

There is a Johns Pizzeria on...44th i think. very reasonable, good food.

Right behind (actually, attached... ask the doorman) the hotel is Platafoma Churrascara. Excellent food and service. I know you asked for less pricey, but if you want to splurge ($50 pp), I highly reccommend it.

Plataforma Churascarra is a good place for meat dishes. Trattoria Trecolori on 45th Street is a very good Italian (in spite of my less enthusiasm for theater district restaurants).

Since more stupid questions such as "what to pack", "what to wear" etc. gets readily answered here without being castigated, I don't see any harm in bsam's query.

It's not the question that's bothersome, it's the response!

If you like Thai food, try Pongsri Thai. I've eaten at the one in Chinatown several times. There's also one in the Theatre Dist at 244 West 48th Street.
