NYC questions - dress code & Sunday brunch
 

My wife and I are planning our first ever trip to NYC in mid October.<BR>We plan to attend a Broadway show on Saturday night, preceded by dinner at a theater district restaurant.<BR>We're also thinking of doing Sunday brunch at Tavern on the Green.<BR><BR>I have two questions:<BR><BR>1. What would be the recommended dress code for the Saturday dinner/theater? Coat and tie, or would casual slacks and sweater be OK?<BR><BR>2. Would the Tavern on the Green Sunday brunch be a worthwhile experience?<BR><BR>Thanks.

You won't be the only one if you wore casual dress to the theater. There is no dress code so dress for comfort. I don't know about the quality of the brunch but you couldn't find a better setting than Tavern on the Green for a Sunday brunch.

Bubba-<BR><BR>I think a sweater and slacks are fine for the theater. I've seen people in jeans, but in the evening it's better to at least get a little dressed up. Keep in mind that the show you are going to can make a little bit of a difference, too. For example - I'd get more dressed up for The Producers than Puppetry of the Penis. But that's just me...<BR><BR>As for Tavern on the Green. It's your first time in NYC so I'd say go for it. I prefer TOG in the evening so you can see the lights, etc., but I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've never been to a brunch there, but the dinners are usually pretty good.<BR><BR>Have fun in NYC!

Make sure to ask for the Crystal Room for Brunch at the time you make your reservation. There are plenty of "bad" dark rooms at TOG. If you are going to spend around $80 a couple for brunch, why not sit in the best room. If they tell you when you arrive that there are no tables available in the Crystal Room, tell them that you requested it when you made your reservation and will wait for the next available table. TOG is an experience, particularly on a beautiful sunny day. Enjoy.

I think that part of the fun of going to a show is the getiing at least a little decked out for your night on the town. But of course you'll see people dressed in everything from formal wear to jeans. I think smart casual attire is good for many shows, but you will never stick out if you get a little dressed up, as many New Yorkers do.<BR><BR>As far as Tavern on the Green... The one plus it has is that it's in a beautiful spot in Central Park, which in mid-October will be absolutely gorgeous. If you sit in one of the outer windowed rooms, it will be a beautiful setting, and you can walk off your brunch in Central Park afterwards. But Tavern on the Green is not really about having a good meal or experiencing New York. It's kind of an overpriced tourist trap, complete with a gift shop right in the restaurant. You could always take a walk over and check it out first to see if it's your style... many people are surprised at what it's like when they get there. I think in a city with so many choices for a truly special dinning experience, it would be kind of a shame to pay so much for what you get at Tavern on the Green. But I do understand the desire to go, because it's such a landmark. If you want to do something different that still would give you great views of Central Park, I recommend Cafe Botanica. Or, if you don't mind leaving the Central Park location for something really over the top you should go to Norma's (in Le Parker Meridien Hotel) truly unforgettable! Or if you want to check out downtown New York, you could go to Five Points which also has a fantastic Sunday brunch. There are so many to choose from... whatever you decide, I hope you have an unbeliebale experience in New York!

By all means do the Sunday brunch at<BR>Tavern on the Green if for nothing else when you get home, you can brag you went there and all your friends and relatives will say "cool". If you tell them you went to Cafe Botanica, Norma's or Five Points, they'll say "Huh?"
