NYC Pre-Theatre Dinner-Single Diner
 

I will be in NYC on my own for two nights prior to a meeting. I am going to the theatre one night and would like to have a nice dinner before. I need a restaurant where I would feel comfortable alone. Price does not matter much, but I'm not a very adventurous eater. I prefer "homestyle" food and also like Mexican, BBQ and Italian.

I've eaten single at Trattoria d'ell Arte on 7th Avenue between 56th and 57th. Excellent Italian just north of the theater district.

Well since you mention BBQ, I'd consider Virgil's on 44th and probably convenient to your theatre (what are you seeing?). I've seen many single diners there by the way, often what appear to be local business people.

Why not do the clasic Cafe Un Deux Trois? Cafe comfort food, a lively pre-theater business and close to almost any theater.

Cajungirl - You didn't mention greek, but I've been in your shoes before and have enjoyed a few solo meals at Molyvos- they have a prix fixe pre-theater menu (check their website) for somewhere around $32 or so, and you can eat at the bar. It's a few blocks' walk to the Theater District (the restaurant is very close to Carnegie Hall) but I love their lamb, and the baklava spiral is quite good. Have fun!

You could eat at the sushi bar at Ruby Foo, or the counter at Virgil's or Ollie's Noodles (chinese). The reason I say counter or bar is because it is really hard to get pre-theater seating in any of these restaurants, and it is always more fun at the counter where you can chat up the bartender. Virgil's is especially good for that.

You can also eat at the bar at Joe Allen. The food is fairly "homestyle". If you're a celebrity watcher you might see someone famous there. On our last visit we saw Rosie O'Donnell.

Osteria del Circo on W.55th street.
Its Italian. They are so nice. They will give you a table in the restaurant or you can sit at the bar or in the bar they have mini-tables. I've gone in there by myself many a time after work for a decent meal or drink. They could not be more accomodating!!
