NYC - Please help me choose a show

Hi all,

We will be going to NYC for a weekend in March to celebrate my son's 17th birthday. He is a huge fan of theatre, particularly musicals. Last year we went to Billy Elliott which we loved. The other show he has really wanted to see is In The Heights which was our plan for this year. However, it is closing on Jan. 9th. So...now we need a Plan B choice.

Have seen: Lion King, Avenue Q, Billy Elliott, Stomp, Blue Man Group, Les Mis, Phantom, Wicked, and a number of others on tour or locally. Also loved Chamber Magic a few years ago.

Considering: Memphis, Jersey Boys. Have the soundtrack of Next to Normal and considering, but just not sure we are in the mood for dark and disturbing. Maybe a Little Night Music? Or American Idiot? I don't really keep up much ...

Any others I should really consider? Also welcome "votes" on the above choices. :-)
Thanks and Happy New Year.

I've heard good things about Andrew Jackson, a new musical just opening, and of course Spiderman, should have all the kinks worked out by then.

Jersey Boys and Next to Normal are both great!! After them, next choice would be Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Addams Family was eh, not good. If you want to see the Broadway cast version of a show you've seen, go for BILLY ELLIOTT!!! Second choice: WICKED.

Thanks....sorry, should have written more clearly. We saw OTHER shows locally. Saw both Wicked and Billy Elliott ON Broadway. :-)

Will check out Spiderman and Bloody Bloody AJ.

Leaning towards Memphis at the moment....

Update...FYI

Andrew Jackson seems to have closed on Jan. 2nd. Too bad.

If he likes Green Day, American Idiot is perfect for a 17 year old. Jersey Boys is great too....I would pick either one of those for a 17 year old, taking all our grand kids to Spiderman in February, hopefully all the kinks will be worked out....

definitely see Memphis over Spiderman *from reviews I've read, spiderman is just bad. Don't know anything about American Idiot but that sounds like a good other choice for a teenage boy.

OK, Jersey Boys remains on the "list" for "next time." It seems to have come in second several times. Given that son not a big Green Day guy and I am not so sure about Spiderman , I went ahead and got tix for Memphis. Able to get good seats at okay price and I think it will really appeal to him and my husband.

Thanks for your all your input! Happy New Year.

If you don't mind off color humor, Avenue Q is really fun and funny playing off Broadway. You can get discounted tickets when you arrive by printing out a discount from the left column of Broadwaybox.com Sister Act opens in previews on March 24 and I think should be fun.

Mclaurie, they've already seen Avenue Q (see list in first post)

I good web site for planning your trip is NY Theater dot com. Their trip planner section lists what's on week by week. Of course things can change due to early closings or late openings, but its a starting point. My personal choice would be "Priscilla Queen of the Desert".

Thanks again! Now I have some great ideas for next time. Love the look of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. And didn't know Sister Act is opening - I agree that could be a lot of fun.
As for "off color humor," I embarrassed to say we love it.
;-) Oh, which reminds me that in addition to Ave Q, we also saw Spamalot.

I'd take him to "Lombardi".

My son saw Avenue Q when he was 16 and really liked it. But on another note, the previews for War Horse are beginning on March 15th and it's a show that has been getting wonderful reviews in London so it could be fun to see something that has just come out. We just took my son and 3 friends to Long Story Short with Colin Quinn (for his 18th) and it was non stop laughs, but I think that too is closing... good luck! Have a wonderful time.

I saw War Horse in London. It is a fantastic production but the subject matter and plot are very intense.
