Did some more research. I think she will be there on our arrival Sunday, so I ordered two tickets for that show. They aren't the best tickets - but they are tickets. I thought I'd better jump because there weren't many tickets left - and it made sense to see her rather than her understudy. (Although I imagine her understudy is very good too.)

familythattravels Mar 19th, 2014 05:01 PM

I saw Tyne Daly in Mothers & Sons last year at the Bucks County Playhouse and it was incredible. Not sure how much has been changed since it moved to NYC but the cast is great.

traveler2005 Mar 19th, 2014 08:10 PM

What I understand would be the hardest tickets are done. We'll see Beautiful during the Sunday matinee and Kinky Boots during the Wednesday matinee. Now to decide on the rest.

Question - For some of the plays that I haven't purchased yet, if I wait and take the Broadway Box code to the box office, will I save the $8.50 per ticket service charge? I should know this, but I don't remember.

Here is my tentative list:
Sun matinee: Beautiful (purchased)
Sun eve: Buyer and Cellar (not many choices for Sun. night - the other choice for that time would be Forbidden Broadway.
Mon: Bullets over Broadway (ditto on the not many choices)
Tues: Gentleman's Guide
Wed matinee: Kinky Boots (purchased)
Wed. PM: After Midnight
Thurs: Mothers and Sons

We would be leaving after the play on Thursday. I'd rather not stay that late, but if we don't, we'd have to delete one of the other choices if we want to see Mothers and Sons.

NeoPatrick Mar 20th, 2014 03:52 AM

yes, you will save the fees if you use the code at the box office.

This sounds like a pretty spectacular list of theatre to me.

Are you aware that Buyer and Cellar is only about an hour and 40 minutes long and it plays on Sunday at 2:30 AND 7:30? Forbidden Broadway is an hour and a half (or maybe a little longer now that they've added some more). It plays on Sunday at 3 and 7. So it is quite possible to see BOTH on Sunday. I'd probably do a brunch and some walking in the Village on Sunday and see the 2:30 of Buyer and Cellar, then head back to midtown and see Forbidden Broadway in the evening.

NeoPatrick Mar 20th, 2014 03:58 AM

Sorry, as soon as I posted I realized you have tickets to Beautiful for Sunday matinee. Need more coffee. I could have sworn that said "Sat". Now that Michael Uhrie has left Buyer and Cellar, I haven't heard too much about it. Some LOVED that show more than I did. I enjoyed it, but mainly simply for HIS performance. Frankly I'd probably opt for Forbidden Broadway of the two.

For Buyer and Cellar, I rec'd this email yesterday. I don't know if this is a good deal or not.

Thanks again everyone. I will give be sure and let you know what we finally decide!

My husband mentioned the NY Philharmonic and I found that they have a rehearsal one morning that we will be there. (They also have a concert, but that would take away a night for a show.) So I ordered tickets and am surprising him.

HowardR Mar 20th, 2014 02:10 PM

For Buy & Cellar, that's the same offer that's been continually updated and available for quite a while now.
As for whether to see Forbidden Broadway or Buyer & Cellar, you're in a win/win situation. And, further good news is that discounts are available for both. I'd check the long-range weather forecast for that Sunday. And, if the forecast is for sunny weather, then I'd recommending opting for Buyer & Cellar, with an added incentive of spending the day in Greenwich Village.

doug_stallings Mar 20th, 2014 06:45 PM

I'm really glad you got tickets for Kinky Boots. It's very enjoyable.

I've read mixed things about If/Then but Idina Menzel is always good. If you are a fan of her or the composer go for it.

There's a big discount for Gentlemans Guide, so you can probably wait for that and save the service charges.

traveler2005 Mar 20th, 2014 06:59 PM

Actually, I didn't know who Idina Menzel was until the slaughtering-her-name event. But I thought Next to Normal was amazing. I cried almost all the way through, but loved it.

At this point, I think we are going to try to buy the rest of the tickets at the box offices. (We have Beautiful and Kinky Boots.) Hopefully, this will not be a mistake. On the other hand, since there are more shows that we want to see than we have times to see them, if one is sold out, we can go to another on the almost-made-it list.

I came across this but not sure when it really opens, or if it might strike your fancy:

The Kit Kat Klub Reopens for Business: Cabaret, Starring Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams, Begins March 21
Alan Cumming, who won a Tony for his portrayal of the sexy and seductive Emcee in Cabaret, returns to the Kit Kat Klub March 21, when Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall's Tony-winning production is revived at Studio 54.

There's a really interesting off Broadway production of I Remember Mama at the gym at Judson Church in the village - 10 powerful actresses in their 60's-80's play all parts. I saw the first preview.

I am heading to NYC hoping to see 2 shows on Tuesday evening, April 15 and Wed. matinee, April 16. I have nothing in particular in mind, and may decide to get what is available at the TKTS booth.

What is the "Broadway Box code". Traveller 2005 mentioned that it lets you avoid the $8.50 ticket charge. Where do you get it and how does that work?

RobertaL Mar 23rd, 2014 09:07 AM

Shelleyk, not sure about the Broadway Box code, but if you are shooting for tickets at the TKTS booth, here's a link that will show you what's available today (to get a rough idea of what might be available on Tuesday).

HowardR Mar 23rd, 2014 09:14 AM

shelleyk, to explain the code thing: For any show available on discount at either broadwaybox.com or playbill.com, the offer will have a code which you must provide at the time of ordering the tickets, regardless of whether you do it by phone, online or in person. The code does NOT save you the service charge. For any telephone or online order, you will pay a service charge (in the area of $7-9.50 per ticket). The only way you avoid the service charge is to buy the tickets in person at the box office.

traveler2005 Mar 23rd, 2014 08:06 PM

Question re Gentlemen's Guiide- I saw a billboard for it. Is it a period piece? Is the humor similar to Spamalot or Monty Python or (if anyone remembers him) Benny Hill?

NeoPatrick Mar 24th, 2014 03:38 AM

Traveler2005, I'd say yes to all of that. It's in the style of an old English Musical Hall, often just silly fun. Comparisons to Benny Hill and Monty Python are valid.

ncounty Mar 24th, 2014 07:10 AM

Thanks for that link, RobertaL!

shelleyk Mar 24th, 2014 08:59 AM

I thank you also, Roberta. That will be a great help.

traveler2005 Mar 24th, 2014 10:58 AM

The tix link is handy, Roberta. Thanks from me too. It's good to be able to see what might be offered.

After I decided on shows, I checked both broadwaybox.com and playbill.com for discount offers. If they have one and someone is already in NYC, it could save time to take the code directly to the box office rather than standing in the tix lines. Plus you can do it in advance - not just on the same day.

You can also call or do it online, but there are extra fees for that.
