NYC one day

I'm looking for suggestions on what to do in NYC this Friday. We have the late morning and afternoon before we have dinner and see Jersey Boys at night. We are 2 50ish couples and 2 18 year old girls. Our friends are from Connecticut and have been to NYC many times and want us to decide what to do. We've been before and done some of the touristy things. I plan to do some research of past posts later on when I have more time but I thought I'd put this question out there. We'd like to be outside if the weather is nice. Museums and shopping are not of interest on this trip. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

If it's nice, head downtown to Greenwich Village or Soho or maybe the meatpacking district and have a walk around and then some lunch.

If you want to do a walking tour, there's a free tour of the area around Grand Central on Fris. at 12:30.

You could spend some time exploring Central Park. Top of the Rock is another idea.

mclaurie, so funny you mention that walking tour. I had just been on one of the "free activity" sites and had written that down. Any idea how long it usually lasts? I'm a little concerned about the comment on the website about children would find it "tedious" -- maybe Lee would too?

mclaurie May 20th, 2008 02:04 PM

It's 90 mins. If he gets bored, you can always walk away. ;)

Anyone else?

Watch out for the hordes of people leaving the city. This Friday is the beginning of Memorial Day weekend, so most of the day and evening will be traffic-packed.

I second the idea of Central Park.

Another outdoor activity would be to walk the Brooklyn Bridge and then wander through the financial district or Chinatown/Little Italy before heading uptown for your show.

The free Grand Central tour is good! Our guide took us though the terminal as well as outside to show us nearby landmarks, etc. and shared some information that was new to me even after going to NYC for years.

Patrick it would be fine for you to just walk away if Lee has had enough.

mclaurie and Margo, "just walk away". Gosh, why didn't I think of that? I guess I was picturing us all chained together or something --- LOL!

We had a very busy day in NYC. We took the train to Grand Central and then the subway just into Brooklyn. We had possibly the best ice cream I've ever had at Brooklyn Ice Cream (I think that's the name) before walking into Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge. We visited the World Trade Center site and St. Paul's church and then walked through Tribeca and Greenwich Village. From there we took a cab (or was it the subway?) and walked a little on 5th Ave. before stopping for a drink. We had an excellent dinner at Cara Mia before the show. Jersey Boys was great!

KathyK...

We are leaving for NYC next week and want to take the subway to Brooklyn....where did you get off for Brooklyn Ice Cream? And, is it near Grimaldi's Pizza and/or Jacques Torres Chocolates? Where do you get off for those places?

Your day sounds like a lot of fun...Jersey Boys is great! We can't wait to get back to NYC..this is our 2nd trip. I hope the weather is ok for us to walk across the bridge...I am checking it everyday but its kind "iffy" now.

I'm not sure if we took an A train or a C train but we got off at High Street. I recall seeing Grimaldi Pizza in the area. There was a very long line. Didn't see the Chocolate place. But if you get the double chocolate ice cream with hot fudge sauce at Brooklyn Ice Cream you won't need to go for chocolates!

Hi Shadow. My guess is Kathy was referring to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (at 1 Water St, near Old Fulton St). It's on my list for August..

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant...cream-factory/

Jacques Torres is at 66 Water St - can't be too far away.

Grimaldi's is at 19 Old Fulton St, under the bridge.

Looks like they are all within a hop, skip and a jump, but a local may need to confirm this.

Shadow, looks like you can take the following subway lines from Manhattan:

2 or 3 to Clark Street
A or C to Brooklyn Bridge-High Street
F to York Street

Another thought if going to the Ice Cream Factory and/or Grimaldi's is to take the water taxi from the west side and get off at Fulton Landing. The ice cream factory is about 10 steps away -- right on the dock.

Thanks everyone for the info. on the ice cream, pizza and chocolates!
I am gaining weight as I write!! lol....

NeoPatrick...thanks for that info..but, I thought when I checked into the water taxi's that they only ran on the weekend? Maybe I was looking into the wrong thing? Do you have a website for it? I can check it out again...I do go brain dead sometimes!!

Shadow

Here you are:
www.nywatertaxi.com/commuters/

They have a "tourist" hop on-hop off deal that is weekends only. Maybe that's what you saw, but the regular route is every day.

Shadow May 28th, 2008 04:10 PM

NeoPatrick:

Thanks!! I misunderstood before...that would be fun....I will keep the info. with me and see if that works out...

We arrive into NYC on Tue. eve. June 3..weather looks "iffy"...bringing an umbrella for sure!

richbutnot May 28th, 2008 04:35 PM

The water taxi looks good to me also, but I'm with Shadow. It looks like three routes stop at Fulton Landing, one is out of service until the end of June and the other two only run on weekends. Am I missing something?

Shadow May 29th, 2008 10:13 PM

Still trying to figure out about the Fulton Landing trip?

Anybody understand it?

thanks,
Shadow

That site always was unclear, but even more so now. It shows "commuter routes" which have to be M-F, but there is no real schedule for that. I really don't know what to tell you at this point.
