NYC on 4th of July

Some friends are planning to spend a few days in the city over July 4th. I read that Macy's has an incredible fire works show. Where should we be to be able to see it? Thanks!

Assuming it is the same as past years, the east side, south of the 59th street bridge down to Battery Park. They close off the FDR for people to go and watch.

Best viewing is from 59th St bridge to about 14th St. I believe the fireworks barges will be limited to the East River, not visible at Battery Park.

The number of barges seems to change every year. Some years I've been able to see fireworks just south of the Brooklyn Bridge (note: you're not allowed to view them from the bridge walkway) from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade or South Street Seaport....but I don't know if they always have a downtown barge. The FDR east of Midtown always has a good vantage point, but after trying that one year (elbow to elbow people, VERY difficult to get in/get out) I swear I'll never do it again.

Thank you everyone. I am familiar with the city and I with your input I know exactly what I should do!
