I hear Tia Pol is very good. Don't know the other place. As to $20 lunches, you really should either buy a Zagat guide or subscribe online. There are a slew of top restaurants that have prix fixe lunches for (3 courses!) for +/-$20. I totally agree with you about taking advantage of the variety of ethnic food available. In addition to Spanish and Korean, don't forget Indian (Amma on east 51 st very good). A number of Indians also do $12-14 all you can eat lunch buffets. Then there's Thai, Turkish, Asian....

Clifton - great suggestions here - and I second your ideas of Tia Pol and Mandoo - they both more than fit the bill of your request for hearty, delicious, inexpensive and atmospheric . . . When you go to Tia Pol, be sure to stroll down 22nd Street between 9th and 10th - a really lovely block with beautiful townhouses. Take a look at Clement Moore Park - named for the reputed author of " A Visit From St. Nicholas" who lived nearby and taught at the Theological Seminary up the block.
Mandoo is lots of fun too, I have friends who like it a lot, but I'm not wild about it.
Other restaurants you might like are Maurizio on W. 13th between 5th and 6th Avenue (lovely Tuscan food) Devi ( great Indian) on East 17th St., The Mermaid Inn (good fish)on Second Avenue, Dim Sum Au Go Go on East Broadway . . . . Have Fun!

Tia Pol is an excellent little restaurant. Caso Mono is another excellent choice for Spanish, though a little more expensive (try the wild boar and the manchego tasting). (There is a wine/ham bar next door called Bar Jamon - perfect for a glass of wine and a snack after a cold day walking around Gramercy.)

Thanks so much. We'll check those out. We've been reading and think we're going to try Bali Nusa for lunch the first day, since it's near the hotel.
We have some Indonesian relatives they made some incredible spring rolls and satays the last time we visited. Been craving them every since. Since they're back in Melbourne, Aus and there's no good Indonesian around here, we're going to give that a spin as well. We'll check out Zagats too, as so many recommended.
mp, I always enjoy places with historical aspect like that. Thanks for adding that. Sounds like a nice walk, and we want to get out of midtown anyway, for variety.
We'll let you know how it went!
