NYC Museums

I am going to nyc for memorial day weekend.
Which museum should I go to?

Whitney
Frick
Brooklyn

I need to pick 1

You obviously must start with the Metropolitan, one of the world's greatest!

Of your 3 choices I would recommend the Metropolitan too, one of the 2 or 3 greatest in the world. Then the new Whitney.

PaulRabe May 17th, 2015 05:46 PM

I agree.
You obviously love art -- just as I do.
Going to New York to see art means you go to the Metropolitan.

If you've already seen this museum, then my recommendation is to see it a second time.

If you've already made plans for one day at the Met, then my recommendation is to spend two days there. After six hours there, you'll find you brain and your feet are worn out but you've still seen only half of it. So just come back a couple days later.

If you're still not convinced, then my recommendation is to go to the Brooklyn

The second choice is the best modern art museum in the world, even if they have a mandatory admission fee, MoMA.

NewbE May 17th, 2015 09:22 PM

The Met isn't one of his three options.

Have not been to the new Whitney

The Frick is worthwhile especially since they have 3 Vermeers and only 35 are considered genuine and one questionable.

Brooklyn has been emerging from it recent past problems of horrible management and odd exhibitions.

NewbE, we know that the Met isn't one of the the OP has listed. What we're saying is that it should be at the top of the list. Now, if he/she is intentionally not including the Met on the list for some reason, then I'd say any of the three mentioned would be a good choice!

OP needs to clarify what their interests are and what they have seen already.

Obviously the Met is #1 - but if they feel they have already covered it then MoMA is next - unless they have no interest in modern art.

After that I reco the Frick - but agree I have not seen the new Whitney yet.

If I had to choose one museum, it would be the Frick, the best small museum in NYC. Every work is a masterpiece. There really are no minor pieces here, and the setting is really lovely. To me there's no contest. If you have limited time, the Frick is infinitely more user-friendly and a better experience than the Met. The latter is wonderful and a world-class museum, but I find it totally overwhelming.

Brooklyn has a great Egyptian collection and some other good works, and it's next door to the botanical garden, but it's out of the way. It's also a great museum, though.

The Whitney is supposed to be great, but the art itself has never really appealed to me. I've been to the old Whitney several times and it always left me cold. Obviously, I haven't been to the new Whitney.

The Frick . Wonderful, a great experience.

Frick

Travelkitty May 18th, 2015 09:13 AM

I'd pick the Frick, but it depends on your interests

NewbE May 18th, 2015 10:11 AM

I love the Frick, adore it, but am also dying to see the new Whitney. It's an apples vs oranges comparison, made more complicated by the Brooklyn option: will you be going out of your way, or will you already be in Brooklyn? Impossible question, sorry!

I would pick the Frick if you haven't been. But I haven't been to the new Whitney.
