NYC Monet at Wildenstein Gallery

If you are in NYC from now until June 15th your might want to make time for the exhibit Claude Monet: A Tribute to Daniel Wildenstein and Katia Granoff” at Wildenstein & Company, 19 East 64th Street, admission is $10, $5 students. There is more information here: http://tinyurl.com/24dzmy and on the museum's website at www.wildenstein.com

There are over sixty Monet paintings from public and private collections, some rarely seen. There are no advance ticket sales, and I believe the gallery is limiting occupancy to about 150 at a time.

mclaurie May 6th, 2007 05:22 PM

I read about this, Margo. Have you been?

Margo_Chester May 6th, 2007 06:15 PM

Unfortunately, no! I have seen some of the paintings that are on exhibit, like the works on loan from the Musée Marmottan in Paris, but some of the others are rarely seen and I would love to have the opportunity to view them! Right now I don't plan to be back in NYC until late June but . . . . this is tempting!

NJgirlinPhx May 10th, 2007 12:09 PM

Thank you so much for posting this! We'll be back in town next week *happy dance* and this is at the top of my list!

NeoPatrick May 10th, 2007 12:31 PM

Thanks for the heads up, but you left out one important detail. That $5 admission is for seniors as well as students. People like me of a "certain age" here will appreciate that.

HowardR May 10th, 2007 01:52 PM

I understand the lines have been long!

Margo_Chester May 10th, 2007 03:50 PM

Oops, sorry Patrick - I missed that!

Anxious for someone to attend and report back here, I would so love to see it but I don't think we are going to make it.

Margo_Chester May 10th, 2007 03:51 PM

NJgirlinPhx, let us know if you go!

mclaurie May 12th, 2007 04:41 AM

The show is awesome! It's not large-about 60 paintings in 3 galleries, but oh boy, oh boy, can that man paint. I'm not a huge Monet fan (I like him, don't love him) but there are some really amazing works in the show. He does snow scenes so well and there is a real beauty here. There are 2 haystack paintings and 1 of the cathedral at Rouen.

They allow a certain number of people into the building at a time, and once you're inside they may hold you back from a particular gallery if it gets too crowded. I didn't wait too long to get in (less than 5 mins.) This is definitely a show not to be missed.

lovetolaugh May 14th, 2007 04:42 PM

Thank you so much for posting this information! I was able to see it on Friday and it was one of the highlights of my trip. I made it just before they closed ( I had to run from the subway stop!!)so the line was relatively short. I am a big fan of Monet and this was the chance of a lifetime for me.

NeoPatrick May 15th, 2007 11:37 AM

We went this morning. It is an outstanding collection of Monet's!

We arrived about 9:50 about 10 minutes before they opened and there was one other person in line. We almost had the gallery to ourselves for the half hour we were there. The doorman said it is usually like that during the week in the mornings before 11. "Weekends are a zoo", he said.

jenack May 17th, 2007 10:00 AM

Good exhibit, not great. Most are not museum quality, but the Wilderstein Galleries are beautiful & the admission goes to a good cause.

kathleen May 17th, 2007 10:26 AM

Jenack, What do you mean, most are not museum quality? I can't imagine what a non-museum quality Monet would look like. Please explain.

We plan on going when we're in NYC the first part of June. And as Patrick mentioned, plan on getting there as early as possible on a weekday.

NeoPatrick May 17th, 2007 05:00 PM

I'm curious too what that means -- museum quality, especially since nearly half of them are from museums. And many from private collections most museums would "beg" for.

Margo_Chester May 17th, 2007 05:28 PM

Wow Jenack! I realize that you don't have to love a painting just because it is a Monet, but "most are not museum quality" ??

I guess I would be interested in which ones you thought were not worthy and why you judged them inadequate.

jenack May 17th, 2007 06:33 PM

Wow, you people are really combative. If you compare the works at the Gallery with those at the Met, MOMA, D'Orsay, they are inferior. Sorry folks, that's my opinion & I'm sticking with it. Go argue with someone who enjoys a fight.

NeoPatrick May 17th, 2007 07:08 PM

Thanks for the laugh.

At least now I "understand".

Margo_Chester May 17th, 2007 07:59 PM

Suddenly it's all very clear . . . Maybe next time you're in town they can trot out a nice Thomas Kinkade for you.

HowardR May 18th, 2007 04:58 AM

Score one for Margo_Chester! Good one!

NeoPatrick May 18th, 2007 05:10 AM

MOMA? Are you kidding? Last I knew there were only four or five Monets at MOMA, none of which are considered major works, and ironically I believe one of those is a study of the Japanese Bridge which led the way to one of the several later "definitive" paintings of the bridge in similar style which are on display at the Wildenstein.

kathleen May 18th, 2007 05:33 AM

Jenack,
Thanks for responding to my question. You really didn't explain why you feel they are inferior in comparison to others in major museums. However, you are entitled to your own opinion of the show's selection of works. I was just hoping for a more thorough response and reason why.
Kathy

Margo_Chester May 18th, 2007 08:12 AM

Thanks Howard!

If anyone hears that this sub-par exhibit is extended (I know, wishful thinking) would you please post the info? I won't be back to NYC until late June. Thanks!

HowardR May 18th, 2007 01:41 PM

It's so ludicrous to refer to any Monet painting as "not of museum quality." Gee, where can I get one of those potential discards?

lovetolaugh May 18th, 2007 02:56 PM

Jenack: Who died and made you an art critic?

karens May 18th, 2007 04:55 PM

Wow, I was just in NYC today! Wish I would have known...

The Marmottan was one of my favorite visits in Paris. Just sitting there surrounded by so many wonderful colors...

NJgirlinPhx May 23rd, 2007 09:27 AM

I, unlike jenack, thought this show was a little jewel. Small but superb. We loved seeing some of the variations on the more famous works. And to have the opportunity to see the pices that were part of provate collections was a real treat. We went on a Monday in the late morning and had no problems getting in.

If you're in the city and have an interest in art, I'd highly recommend going to this show!

mikemo May 23rd, 2007 10:16 AM

We were there last Saturday after returning from Rome on Fri PM.
Definitely worth the US$5. psp!
The building is magnificent also.
Less than 10 min on line to enter.

Thanks for the heads up Margo_Chester. I went to this yesterday and was very pleased that I did.
The lines were long, but went pretty fast.

mikemo Jun 9th, 2007 02:40 PM

Seriously, mis amigos, do not miss this!
