NYC - Milford Plaza Hotel
 

Hi all, <BR> <BR>I will be staying at the Milford Plaza Hotel during my 3 day visit to NYC. <BR>I have read negative comments from people from this site regarding this hotel. <BR> <BR>Why is this so?? I'm not expecting first class service or anything, in fact i will not be spending much time in the room, except when to sleep. <BR> <BR>What is so bad about the hotel? Is it the rooms, or carpets, bad service, dirty bathrooms, etc. Please be specific, i want to know what im getting into. <BR> <BR>Thanks in advance!

One problem is location. It's down by 8th ave and that area used to be pretty nasty. That's where most of the peep shows and stuff used to be but I guess Giuliani cleaned things up a bit.

I stayed there 4 years ago. Hopefully they've renovated, because the rooms were horribly rundown. I had holes in my sheets. The "Lullaby of Broadway"? I'd say more like the dump of Broadway. The only positive thing I can say is that the last poster is correct in that the area is fine now - it has really been cleaned up.

I had a reservation several years ago at the Milford Plaza for two nights. I arrived about 8:00pm, and even though I had guaranteed my room for late arrival with a credit card, they had overbooked and did not have a room for me. I was "walked" to another hotel a couple of blocks away. They weren't even polite about it. I was left to carry my suitcase down the street alone in the dark. <BR> <BR>I can't remember the name of the hotel that I was sent to, but it was awful. I slept in my clothes, and wedged the desk chair under the doorknob for some security. <BR> <BR>When I returned to the Milford the next morning to check in, the desk clerk was rude and suggested that I had failed to show up for my first night's reservation. Upon checkout, they tried to charge my a no-show charge for my first night! I had to dig out my receipt from the other hotel to prove that I had indeed been "walked" on the first night. I would never recommend this place to anybody.

angie, <BR>I don't understand why people are so hung up about hotels. <BR>If you are spending a lot of money for vacations, you would want to be exploring your destination, not staying in the actual rooms. You said it yourself that you will only be in the room when sleeping, so i think it would be fine. <BR>I am concerned about 'holes in the sheet'. <BR>Complain if things are not up to your standard. <BR>About the Milford Plaza, i've heard that it was renovated in 1998, not too sure.

it's used by tons of groups who come up for weekend theater and also filled with lots of high school trips--not my idea of a great place to stay in NY--also area is not the greatest

What is so bad about the area? Would i expect to get mugged or see lots of drug dealing. Is that what you mean by not a great location. <BR>I thought it was near Times Square, so assumed it was safe? <BR>Also is the subway closeby as i will be using it as my main means of transportation? <BR>Thanks in advance!

I won’t comment on the hotel since all I know about it is what I read on bulletin boards. I will comment on the area. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE AREA. The hotel is on 8th Avenue (east side) between 45th and 44th Streets. 8th Avenue is one block west of Broadway and Times Square. There are 10 legitimate theaters on 44th and 45th between Broadway and 8th Avenue. That should tell you something about the area. One of the best known streets for restaurants (called Restaurant Row) is on 46th Street, from 8th avenue to 9th Avenue. 8th Avenue does not have the glitz of Broadway but it has, over the past few years, improved. <BR> <BR>My wife works on Broadway and 45th. When she goes out for lunch, or just to take a walk, she always goes to 8th Avenue and walks along 8th Avenue. She has been doing this for more than 10 years and she has never seen anything untoward happen - no muggings, no obvious drug dealing. People who have negative things to say about the area invariably mention the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th avenue between 40th and 42nd. or the peep shows and porno shops located on 8th Avenue. Bus terminals do attract people out to do mischief but when these people wander from the bus terminal they are more likely to walk on 42nd Street or in the Times Square area. As for porno places there are only one of two left and none are across the street from the hotel. <BR> <BR>The bottom line - make you decision based on the hotel and not the area..

angie, we have stayed at this hotel 4 years straight before christmas. we have never had a problem, its old, but were hardly in the room. i think the location is great. its not the most luxurious ive been in but who really cares, im there to see shows and shop. it was fine with us.

I agree with rqf, there is nothing wrong with that area. Its actually quite convenient if you are planning on going to any shows because of the theatres nearby, and plenty of transport access. <BR>I've noticed that alot of negative comments are from people who have stayed there years ago. It might be useful to hear from someone who has stayed there recently.

Just back from the MP. Yes, it's not the best hotel I've stayed in, but the location more than makes up for the small rooms. So close to EVERYTHING! You'll love it.
