Well, Katz's is not a kosher deli, first of all. It is kosher-style. And if you did not lilke the food there, I would doubt that you will like the food in any other place of that ilk. Closser to your area would be the Carnegie Deli but I have mixed feelings about the corned beef there. What did you order at Katz' by the way, if you don't mind telling us?

it is not that we don't like kosher deli food.It was that the corned beef was not that good. We are from New york, now live in central new jersey.
We love a good corned beef sandwich;which we did not get that day at Katz's. We are coming back into the city for the day and wanted to try another kosher deli.

There is also a Mendy's at 39th and Park (I think that's right) and a Mendy's outpost at Grand Central's food court.

Here are the locations:

Looks like the Mendy's on 57th street (I didn't know it was there, either) is in that Galleria building b/t Park and Lex.

I also don't know Mendy's. Here's a list of places
http://gonyc.about.com/od/restaurants/tp/best_delis.htm

I'd try Ben's.

Ben's Kosher Deli - on 38th between Seventh & Eighth Aves (close to Seventh). It's actually kosher (as opposed to kosher-style). They are closed on Saturdays.
I would say the food at Katz's and the Carnegie Deli are better than Ben's, so not sure what you will think, although Ben's is good. I order extra-lean corned beef there and it's always been fine. Also, Ben's is a more comfortable and attractive setting than Katz's or any of the other well-known delis.

Yeah, Ben's is ok.....much nicer setting, as you say. Actually many of these delis buy their meats from the same producer in a NY suburb, I forget which one...there was a long article about it in the Times a few years back. Will have to check out Mendy's..

The open-faced burger and pastrami sandwich is one very fine dish at Mendy's.

Disclaimer: I am not Jewish but most of my business associates in NYC are. They all swear by it.
