NYC Mexican
Friends will be visiting from out of the country. They want to eat great Mexican in NYC.I only know the usual,Rosa Mexicana and Los Dos Rancheros, on Ninth.Could anyone give me some good recommendations of fun, casual Mexican places in the city? Maybe in the area of the West Village/Soho.Thank you~

Cosmic Cantina around union square on third st. Sorry but I can't remember the cross street. Its very cheap( about 7 bucks per person) and healthy. Its VERY tasty as well.

Michelle -- I don't know any in the neighborhoods you mentioned other than MaryAnn's and I don't recommend it. You might check out www.zagat.com. You can search by neighborhood and type of cuisine.

For top notch Mexican, try Zarela's on Second Avenue in the East 50's. Be careful of the "killer Margaritas', more than one will have you staggering. I also understand Zarela has opened a second restaurant in the East 20's, I believe the name is Danzon, although I have never eat there.

For something more standard try The Alamo on E. 48th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Lots of fun and frequently has Mariachi's performing.

It isn't Mexican, but for a great "Nuevo-Latino" dinner, try Chicama on East 18th Street.

They have a long list of different Ceviches and some real intereting Entrees. It isn't cheap, though.

As a previous poster stated, Zarela's is always at the top of the Mexican food ratings. It doesn't satisfy your neighborhood criteria, though.

Mexican Radio on Cleveland, very close to Lafayette & Spring. Great location & great food. Deemed best NYC Mexican food by NY Daily News.
