NYC / Manhattan Hotel Help Needed!

Hello,

Please help with hotel suggestions for NYC / Manhattan area in late June. Priced within reasonable limits... We are looking for something clean, safe and comfortable and convenient to the sights. Under $250 / night would be great.

This will be our first trip to NYC staying in a hotel. Both of us have been before but stayed with friends outside of the city. This time we will be traveling with our 3 yr old and plan to spend a lot of time in / near Central Park and doing the typical touristy things. Easy access to the Park and subway are high priorities.

We will be visiting friends in Queens with a newborn while there - so something in that direction (ie., not the Jersey side) would be preferred for convenience visiting them.

Any suggestions?

Just thought I would top this for you before it fell off the front page of the board.

You might want to take advantage of Priceline. Have you started looking for hotels at all yet?

Study biddingfortravel.com before you attempt to use Priceline if you haven't used it before.

To get an idea of what hotel rates are for the time you would like to visit the city go to kayak.com and you can see what price hotels are going for.

Finally, if you want to check out different hotels you can either do it here, or go to tripadvisor.com and type in the name of the hotel to see if anyone has given it reviews.

Good Luck!

4sammy:

Try www.milburnhotel.com on the Upper West Side, close to the subway, food etc. very family friendly and probably within your budget.

We have stayed at this hotel and found it quite adequate. The little kitchen would probably be handy for snacks/drinks for your 3 year old.

The Hampton Inn near Central Park would be good for you. Small zoo,but very enjoyable especially the penguins. Many families stay there. Haven't checked the price for your dates, but it should be in your range. Cheap restaurants across the street, subway stop in the block. Breakfast with the hotel.
We really liked it and found it very clean, safe, and a large room with 2 queen sized beds.
People at the desk very friendly and helpful.
We were there before Christmas for 3 nights.

Thanks! I checked rates at the Milford and it looks fine for our needs. Also would like to check the Hampton Inn - gotta love the free breakfasts. There isn't one caleld "Central Park" - can anyone remember the name of this one? There's one in Chelsea, Mad. Square Garden, Times Square... then the rest seem farther out.

For budget - but clean and reliable, try the Newton on the upper west side. A couple of blocks from Cenral Park and only a block from the subway. (Not sure what you mean by the Jesey side. If you mean west of the Park, most less expensive hotels will be. Those on the east side tend to be much more upscale.)

You can look at Priceline, but some hotels rooms are very small and wouldn't have room for a cot or whatever for your child - just one double bed. With Priceline you get o guarantees.

Yuo could have a look at travelzoo to see if they have discounts for your dates.

Sammy -- did you look into the MilBURN hotel, as recommended by SandyBrit or the MilFORD, which few people recommend.

There's a Courtyard Marriott on the Upper East Side (around 92nd) that might fit your budget.

There's also a Doubletree around 51st and Lexington that was recently refurbished. The rooms are small but comfortable.

If you don't want to take a risk with priceline, it's worth having a look at Quikbook.com, where you can see exactly which hotel you're booking. This website sometimes has discounted hotel rates (not huge discounts, but you might find a good deal at 20% off rates quoted in the hotel's website). Many of the bookings can be cancelled without penalty, although some of the super-discounted rates are non-refundable. I've booked hotels through Quikbook frequently over the past 10 years and never had a problem.

The Courtyard on 92 St is in a VERY inconvenient location. A LONG walk to the nearest subway - esp with a small child.

Good info - am looking now at Quikbook. I did find a good deal at the W - more upscale than we really need but who can resist a posh hotel??? Only problem is it is non-cancellable which is tricky when dealing with a child who can get sick at any moment... we will see.

Thanks for the advice on the CY 92nd St - don't want to have to walk too far to the subway.

What do you guys think about the LaQuinta on W 32nd St... not terrible rate ($269) and includes breakfast.

4sammy:

LaQuinta on W. 32nd Street - have a look at reviews on www.tripadivsor.com If you do decide to stay here please report back as to how it worked out.

How many nights will you be in NYC? Do you want just a room or would you like a sitting area? Breakfast is easy with a small kitchen.

I had good luck with Priceline, but booked a back-up that I could cancel just in case I couldn't anything with priceline. Seems some of the best deals are last minute, so you need to have a back-up. Good luck.

The Hampton is the one called Times Square North. We stayed there last summer and were very pleased with the location. Rooms were a good size and the free breakfast was a plus.
