NYC: Madison Square Garden Dining? The Club Bar & Grill?

Taking my husband to NYC for his birthday next weekend (Michelangelo Hotel) and we have tickets for the Rangers v. Bruins game for Saturday evening at 7:00.

Seats are Club 124 which will give us access to the Club Bar & Grill inside MSG. Has anyone ever eaten there? Do you recommend? If not, can you suggest someplace else close by. Any thoughts on the Play by Play Sports Bar located inside MSG. Thanks for you help.

The area around Garden is notorious for poor dining. I would eat elsewhere and get over to the Garden.

Here are some Ranger traditons that you may not know about.

Ranger fans start cheering way before the Star Spangled Banner is finished.

Someone will start whistling during a lull and the end you are expected to yell, "Potvin Sucks."

When the Rangers score, you are expected to satnd and sing the Goal song. And pump your fist during the Hey! Hey! Hey!

Just in case Crazy Larry starts dancing, he will be in the section next to the television booths, the homophobes in the crowd whill start to chant "Homo Larry."

Be prepared to join the crowd in the chant of a--h--e, whne the ref makes a bad call or a Bruin does something wrong.

Saturday night is date night, so there will less corporate types using the Ranger game as an excuse to get drunk. And there will be less people who know these traditions.

The seats closest to the ceiling are still called the blues. If you sat there you were expected stupid and like an animal. Management chanegd the color of the seats but not the behavior.

Tradition! Tradition!

Thanks for the update on all the traditions....hmmm...sounds just like Boston.

We are huge Bruins fans and have a 12 game weekend package for games in Boston. Just came back from a trip to the Bell Centre in Montreal to take in the Bruins game vs the Canadiens. Loads of fun - it was opening night for Montreal and included a big opening to honor their 100th season.

I am afraid to wear my black & gold at MSG - have to think about that!

Inside MSG, you'll find the "quality" of food you'd expect to find.

Check out Tupelo & Tir Na Nog, both across the street (different streets). Much better.

I would not recommend wearing your Bruins jersey, even though the Bruins have fallen in the enemies list behind the Islanders, Devils, and Flyers.

Some idiot might spell beer on you.

By the way, get to the Garden early.

There is a store called Cosby's that has high quality NHL and NBA gear.

It is on the left when you enter the Garden from the 7th Ave entrance.

Aduchamp1,

I think I will stick with neutral colors!
Thanks for the tip about Cosby's.

We will also hit the NHL shop at the corner of Ave. of the Americas and 47th. Stumbled upon that by accident last year.

Keens Steakhouse, on 36th btwn 5th and 6th is a pretty good, although pricey option. If you eat in the pub, between the bar and dining room, you can get a half portion of its famous mutton (actually younger lamb) chop. Nice surroundings too, before you descend into the barbarism of the Garden.
