NYC - Looking for restaurant that has great tasting menu

Recently returned from Barcelona and had two wonderful tasting menu meals, one at Commerc24 and one at Cinc Sentits. Will be in NYC in June and would like to find a restaurant there with great tasting menu. Trying to stay under $100/person (without wine).

I checked out Picholine's website and loved the sample tasting menu - at $110/person that would be okay. However, the decor looked a bit "stuffy". Would hubby need a coat and tie or just jacket? Any other suggestions in that price range?

P.S. we are not looking for a prix fixe menu but a true tasting menu.

Thanks!!

If you don't mind sitting at the bar, Degustation, in the East Village is one of my current favorites. Chef there is ex-Perry Street. (Jean Georges)

Telepan on the Upper West Side is more "modern" than Picholine. Very good food and excellent wine list. No tie or jacket at either of these.

..also meant to say the chef at Degustation is Catalan.

Nobu is spectacular.
Jean Georges also.

Wd50 on the Lower East Side is fantastic! Can't remember the address but it's in Zaggatts.

Second both Nobu and Babbo. Two of the top tasting menus in the city hands down.

Babbo's tasting menu was wonderful.

Ureña. Owned by Alex Ureña. Excellent menu... very Ferran Adria inspired.

Thanks all. Leaning towards Babbo. I can't make a reservation until later this month, so more recommendations are welcome!

I agree about Urena. He does some interesting disihes..love the short ribs!

Disagree about Nobu. Not the best in the city in my opinion.

It is very difficult to reserve at Babbo unless you want to eat at 6pm or at 11pm. If you do get in, I agree that their tasting menu (I believe it is only pasta) is good.

Jean Georges tasting menu is more than $110 but they offer a set of a few courses for a bit less than that.

Make sure you call Babbo exactly one-month in advance and start calling early. It's like getting tickets to a Stones concert the day they go on sale. Keep trying until the phone rings and someone picks up and hope for the best.

Ate at Urena last week and loved it but unfortunately missed the tasting menu...next time, though!
