Do NYC branch libraries offer computers for internet access to those visiting the city?

If so, how does one sign up for this privilege?

In the past, I tried that at several branches. In all cases the computers were full and you had to sign up and wait a turn. After waiting at a couple for too long, I gave up and haven't tried since.

Can I access the Internet in the library?
Yes, the Internet is accessible in the library. Most locations require that users sign up in person for Internet use sessions. Call your local library if you have questions about how to sign up for Internet use at your location. I clicked the link mp gave me and found it is possible to reserve a PC on line IF one has a library card number and PIN.

Unfortunately, it appears that out-of-towners must pay a $100 fee to obtain a card.

yes, that's right - but you can walk into a branch library and access a computer for free if one is available - I suggest you go to a local neighborhood one early in the AM or try the Donnell on W. 53rd St. as soon as it opens . . .

You can also check your email at any Apple Store or at tekserve on W. 23rd st for free - what is it that you need to do?

I'll be staying on the Upper East Side, so the great Apple Store suggestion won't work for me.

If I can't borrow a library card, I may have to pay whatever the neighborhood FedEx/Kinko's is charging.

there's an Apple Store in midtown, also on 5th Avenue across from the Plaza.

I've found the library on 96th Street between Lexington and Park (I forget the branch name) can be very quiet when it first opens - avoid after 2;30 when the kids come in from school to do homework and such - they tend to use the computers.

Oh, I get it. When you say "Plaza," you mean Plaza Hotel.

I found the Apple Store at 767 5th Avenue. Thanks. I see it is open 24 hours a day, and I will no doubt be in that neighborhood several times during my vist.

Yes- the4 libraries have computers you can use - but you must sign up and the wait is usually kong since the # of computers is very limited.

Don;t know what you need the access for - but why not use an internet cafe - or the business center at your hotel?

Sorry - about the Apple store. It is typically mobbed and you need to make reservations in advance (you can do it online). Unless you go at 2 or 3 am there's a line for everything.

I'm staying with friends on East 79th and I would rather not use one of their computers and I don't want to carry a laptop.

I have found a FedEx on 78th and Lexington and an Internet Cafe at 1476 Lexington.

This forum is always helpful and never more when I have a very specific problem.

Wow NYtraveler, that hasn't been my experience at all - whenever I need to check my email in Soho or in midtown, or at Tekserve on W. 23rd Street, I've never had a problem finding an open computer for a few minutes - any if i'd wanted to surf for an hour, it never seemed to be a problem.

There's also a whole bank of free computers in the Time Warner Cable TV store on East 23rd St. - always a good spot for free surfing.

Maybe you mean a line at the Apple Stores for consulting help or to buy something?

You do not need to reserve to use the computers at the Apple store on 5th Ave; I've waited at most a few minutes for one to become available.
