NYC Kitchen Store

Some friends are travelling to NYC this weekend on their honeymoon. One of their quests is to purchase a coffeemaker.

I'd like to give them a gift certificate to a quintessential NYC store that would has coffeemakers for sale. I checked Dean & Deluca's website, and it looks like they only sell simple coffee presses.

Any fodorite suggestions out there for such a place? Something other than a Macy's-type place -- my friends really want to check out an "only-in-NYC" kind of a kitchen store.

Thanks!

Zabar's without a doubt. Check their website, www.zabars.com. And they have good prices too (unlike D&D).

The Broadway Panhandler in Soho on Broome St., has a pretty large selection of kitchen appliances and gadgets.

I'll second the Broadway Panhandler but I don't know if they do gift certificates.

My pick would be ABC Carpet & Home however, you could easily spend $2,500 for one there. Great store.

If all else fails, there is always Williams Sonoma.

I couldn't help lookup this Broadway Panhandler store. The website is www.broadwaypanhandler.com and it does look very good.

ZABARS at W. 80th and Broadway is not a kitchen store but they have a large selection of coffeemakers. It is one of the quintessential NYC stores. Theremay be others but it is not a strange sight to see a tourist bus in front of the store. They do have gift certificates.

I bought my current coffee maker at Zabar's because I was in the 'hood but I'd vote for Bloomingdales. Their selection is huge-bigger than Zabar's. For an "only in NY" kind of store I recommend Bridge Kitchenware

for pots & stuff but not necessarily for a coffee maker.

Gracious Home, with 2 locations is a home "supermarket" with everything from towels to appliances.

Bridge Kitchenware is nationally famous. Personally, armed with a gift cert., I'd go hog wild there!

In terms of shopping experiences, I think Broadway Panhandler is one of my favorite places in NYC. Bridge has a lot but the store is awful -- dim and cramped and dusty. Zabars can get incredibly zooey, and is definitely more of a food store than a cooking store. BP is spacious and pleasant, their selection is great, and it's in a fun neighborhood to shop in.
