I'mnot aware that they look incrementally brighter

It was a joke.

tuscanlifeedit Nov 23rd, 2009 11:55 AM

ME: totally wrong about most info above

Start here: http://www.tavernonthegreen.com/

Columbia campus: I'm going myself. I've been in the car and bus driving by, and didn't pick up a campus feel, but I'm going on my feet, on my own way to St John the Divine.

Skating at Bryant Park: we were visiting on a Saturday. Very crowded. I'm sticking to that one.

sf7307 Nov 23rd, 2009 12:06 PM

tuscan, I agree it was crowded - I was giving the information about line length so they'll know HOW crowded/long it will take depending on how long the line is actually.

tennesseesoftball Nov 23rd, 2009 12:57 PM

Thanks for the heads up for skating.Ellenem, The Wollman is a great idea.sf7307,the time for waiting is a needed info since no signs posted. The girls are still excited about going on Campus at Columbia, we hope the book store is open. Any suggestions on dinner/lunch near here. The girls have found a cool vintage shop called Allen & Suzi @ 46 amsterdam and w80th, they want to visit. Again do you guys think we should continue to Yankee Stadium after we leave Columbus Univ.? Map wise it looks like it to me. We could always wait and eat a bite near the stadium. Writealiving, I love the Hopstop site! This site is a world of wealth for the subway.I feel like I can go anywhere on the subway with this site. Looking forward to more info from you.Tennessee

>>>Map wise it looks like it to me. We could always wait and eat a bite near the stadium. >>>

Bad idea!

tennesseesoftball Nov 23rd, 2009 01:22 PM

Bad idea? which idea, going to stadium after the university or eating near the stadium?

writealiving Nov 23rd, 2009 01:36 PM

I haven't been to the stadium in a long time but the neighborhood hasn't gotten better. Actually, I haven't been to the new stadium, just the old, but same area. I have heard its nice, but not sure its worth it unless you're a die hard Yankee fan although I did take a tour of Giants Stadium in San Francisco and enjoyed it. If you want to see it to say you saw it, go, but I wouldn't eat around there. There is a spot in the Bronx on Arthur Ave that has great food, but I'm not as familiar with travel there and don't know how far from Yankee Stadium it is. I'm glad you like hopspot, but I can't claim it as mine, lol. I gleamed it from another poster but glad that you found it useful.

ellenem Nov 23rd, 2009 02:31 PM

Eat near Columbia, not near Yankee Stadium

sf7307 Nov 23rd, 2009 04:27 PM

Sorry, I meant eating near the stadium is a bad idea.

nytraveler Nov 23rd, 2009 04:45 PM

If you go to Yankee Stadium you can eat AT the Stadium. There are branches of several restaurants there (go to yankees.com for info on the tours and the restaurants). You won't want to eat in the area - nothing much there but a couple of semi-tacky sports bars.

sf7307 Nov 23rd, 2009 07:33 PM

Are the restaurants at the stadium open in December?

rbud87 Nov 24th, 2009 06:04 AM

Your itinerary is sounding good. Chinatown and Financial District near the end for all the souvenir shopping.
I respectfully disagree with the Port Authority for toilets and food. It's okay for parking but not worth a planned eating spot.
Toilets.... are around; go to nicer shopping stores vs. eating establishments when possible...(Macy's, Toys R Us, FAO Schwartz etc.
Definitely All Day Fun pass for unlimited bus or subway rides...use it more than 3 times a day and it's paid for.
Bus rides down 5th Avenue etc are a nice way to see the city when your feet are tired.

Aduchamp1 Nov 24th, 2009 06:29 AM

You do not have to be respectful. Whoever posted it ws being sracastic.

nytraveler Nov 24th, 2009 08:27 AM

They're trying to make it an all year destination and I've seen ads for some that are open. I would suggest checking in advance - but if they're doing a tour probably at least some of them are. (And without a tour you can;t get in anyway.)

tennesseesoftball Nov 24th, 2009 09:28 AM

At Yankee stadium we will jump on and of the subway for a photo for my dear. Rbud87, I didn't think about saving the Financial D. and area till the end for souvenir's but a lovely idea. Keep the ideas coming and I can't wait for this great trip due to the wonderful insight info. I have gained from this site and all of you.
Oh yea, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Enjoy your families and friends. Tennessee

tennesseesoftball Dec 13th, 2009 01:07 PM

Life is good! Healthy, Happy, God is good, and 5 days till NYC!!! Excitement in the air!! See you soon........:)

K_brklyn Dec 13th, 2009 02:32 PM

I'd give a thumbs down to City Bakery-or at least stick to just the hot chocolate and marshmallows. Not the cleanest place to eat.

tennesseesoftball Dec 13th, 2009 03:15 PM

Thanks K, I will heed your advise. Any other advise is welcome. Oh, the weather/ 10 day forecast looks like ours in west TN. cold and a chance of rain, good thing we don't melt. Does anyone know who will be at the (outside)venues for the morning show or how to find out. I have been on the website (good morning America, ect..) very little info? Let's all have a very Merry Christmas! God Bless!

writealiving Dec 13th, 2009 04:55 PM

I think you have a pretty good outline for your trip. My only advice again is to leave yourself room to discover things, but it sounds like you have it covered. Have a happy and safe trip and let us know how it goes!

mp Dec 13th, 2009 06:40 PM

k-brklyn, I've been eating (terrific buffet/salad bar breakfast & lunch or great bakery and coffee choices)at the City Bakery for 15+ years - first over by Union Square and then at the "new" location - and I can't imagine what you're talking about. It is a completely respected, busy and popular place - and as perfectly clean as every other completely respected, popular and busy place. Really odd accusation without back-up or substantiation.

And the chocolate chip cookies are great, along with the pretzel croissants and the baker's muffins.

writealiving Dec 13th, 2009 06:57 PM

I just saw a write-up in one of the local papers and City Bakery was listed as one not to miss and being one of the places to go for the best food in the city. I haven't been there but have to admit that the write-up made my mouth water.

K_brklyn Dec 13th, 2009 08:40 PM

I was eating there for a very long time and enjoyed it too. It was a go to place to meet friends for a quick bite and to grab lunch near my office. Until one day I saw things hanging around the salad bar that made me not want to return. I also didn't expect it, because the salad bar is popular during lunch, so they should have been more diligent in keeping the area clean.

The salad bar is pricey ($13/lb) for what it is. The main attractions are the hot chocolate, pretzel croissants and marshmallows. The caramelized french toast, mac n cheese and the fried chicken in the hot bar are good also, they charge by weight (about $13/lb) so it gets expensive.

As alternatives I would recommend Clinton Street Bakery for good muffins, breakfast and cookies (during the week is less crowded) or Birdbath Bakery and Mariebelle for hot chocolate.

P.S.
For back-up or substantiation, you can check the restaurant's inspection reports for 2007-2009 they are all online for every restaurant in NYC.

Aduchamp1 Dec 13th, 2009 08:56 PM

Birdbath is owned by City Bakery and Maury Rubin. Birdbath has all the charm of a gulag company store and the selection is limited compared to City bakery.

We too have been going to City Bakery since the beginning and fortunately never saw anything by the salad bar. It is still one of our favorites.

Clinton Street Bakery makes among the best scones and biscuits in the city and is a zoo on the weekends.

City Bakery has seating, but no table service. (They used to have service upstairs on weekends.) Clinton Street has table service and Birdbath barely has a place to stand.

azzure Dec 14th, 2009 01:45 PM

"Things hanging around the salad bar"...now, that is intriguing. I saw a big ol' New York cockroach last time I was in the city...on the street, fortunately, not in a restaurant. Hadn't realized those things were that big.

mp Dec 14th, 2009 06:25 PM

k- yes, I actually DID look up their restaurant inspections - for the past 2 years or so - no big violations, one bad month which was corrected very quickly.

I have seen mice in perfectly clean places. Once we informed the server, who thanked us profusely, conferred with the manager and comped us dessert. I've seen roaches on walls in dives and in white tablecloth restaurants. It happens. It's the restaurant business. As long as it's not IN the food, I'm ok.

azzure - that wasn't a cockroach, that was a waterbug. They were here before us, and they'll be here after we're gone.

tennesseesoftball Dec 15th, 2009 09:41 AM

2 days and counting! Thanks again for all the valuable information.... It's gonna be cold up there!

tennesseesoftball Dec 16th, 2009 06:24 AM

WooHoo:) 1 day and counting! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

coachdj5 Dec 16th, 2009 11:18 AM

Elainee Dec 16th, 2009 11:57 AM

tennesseesoftball Dec 16th, 2009 03:34 PM

Thanks Elainee! We will dress Warm, it is cold in TN. also: 26 degrees. I guess it is natures way to get us prepared for NYC. I have checked and see no percipitation in the forecast for Fri. thru Thurs.. YEA! Any suggestions on EPB at early morning or late such as 11pm(ish)? The girls must go (they think). I am waiting for the Top of Rock. Thanks again to all, you guys are the best!!!!

tennesseesoftball Dec 17th, 2009 07:06 PM

azzure Dec 19th, 2009 03:26 PM

Oh my gosh...are you caught in the giant snowstorm?

tennesseesoftball Dec 22nd, 2009 06:55 PM

Oh, I have missed chatting, however we are nonstop and I want to thank you all and I will respond back when we get home to 55 degree and NO wind! and snow. It is beautiful but very tough conditions to walk around in. WIND oh my what wind! But wanted to wish all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! Your lovely city has made mine...:)

ita Dec 23rd, 2009 07:35 AM

I am sorry for the weather you encountered. I hope you still were able to do much of what you wanted to. I think that this is a prime example of having to be flexible when you travel and not over planning. I am looking forward to hearing how you coped.

Gwendolynn Dec 23rd, 2009 02:07 PM

I sympathize..... I walked 6 blocks in that wind this afternoon and that was enough. Am now consoling myself with a glass of wine. Hope you can do the same -:)

tennesseesoftball Dec 27th, 2009 04:07 PM

We Loved NYC!!! After our flight was delayed we arrive at 10:30pm, and took a taxi from LAG to 53rd and 7th: Sheraton New York and Towers. The cold and the holiday lights, made us excited and ready to hit the streets. Mr. Hamilton upgraded us to club level with a great view of CP on the 49th floor. This hotel is full of tourist and people off the street, to get warm and free internet, but treated us great. Helpful and friendly in every department. I will stay again with them when returning.
Friday evening- Time Square with 2 freshman in college was great and a late night 2:30 am.
Sat. 7:45am -Hit the ground running: Don't be upset but we did the bus loop uptown/downtown to beat the snow and the unknown of how much was coming. We were pleased and stayed on to get us accustom to the city. We hopped off once we arrived at WTC. and visited Trinity church,Woolsworth Building,Flat Iron, Wall street, City hall, NYSE and lunch at Katz's (thanks) it was great!!! Split the meals because of its size. The buildings are super sized and your servings of food are also.HA! IT HAS BEGUN,SNOW!! Cold on the tour but we hoped back on the bus to get to South Street seaport. Not very interesting but we decided to go to a play that night and walked right into the TKS and got great 2nd row seats in orch. (center) for Rock of Ages for myself and hubby, and 4th row center orch. to In The Heights for the girls. We bought our 7 day pass tickets for the subway and rode back to The Plaza area.EASY going! Now getting windy and colder (1pm) we ducked into buildings to see the sights and get warm. We went in the Plaza, Oak room, Apple Store, FAO,Nike,Tiffanys, Bergodlf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Cartier. Ducked inside some indoor seating are near Cartier to get our berrings and rest a moment. Nice little unknown by tourist area. No Crouds and locals to talk with for info. It was very nice. Subwayed back to hotel(the 7th and 53rd was right outside our hotel doors)We had happy hour and light horsd'oeuvres then off to the show. A quick walk and we were there. We all enjoyed our shows. However after being inside for 3 or so hours we walked out to a massive amount of snow for southerners. We had to turn nirht to get back to our hotel and the wind and snow was blinding.
Sun.Morning- 9am- Subway to Union Square, did the local outdoor market. Loved the area and the market. We ate at the local venders in the market and then we did Soho and Chinatown. Whoo, Chinatown, not for me! Loved Soho and off to Macy's. Oh my Santa was happy to see my 2 grown girls waiting in line for him. We loved it and laughed alot. Now to the bitter cold ESB. Not any crouds we were in and up in 15 minutes. No others idots out in 17 degree 30 mile winds.
I will return tomorrow with more:) Good night all!

sf7307 Dec 27th, 2009 04:39 PM

It sounds so exciting.....cold, but exciting! Looking forward to more.
