NYC in April or May?
 

We are planning a 3-4 night visit to NYC in April or May 2003 hoping the weather will be mild for the walking, sightseeing and shopping we plan on doing. Although Easter (April 20) and Mothers Day (May 11) should prove most enjoyable, I would think shopping would be very crowded and plane travel a real zoo those weekends. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday of May 2, 3, &amp; 4 are shaping up as our choice of dates. <BR>Are there any special events in NYC this first weekend in May we may wish to see, or any comments about spring travel to NYC.

There is no time in the spring when the city isn't packed. Granted, Easter will be a little more crowded but still plan for crowds.

Hi Bob,<BR>New York City has 8 million people,is served by 3 major airports, has lots of hotels, stores, restaurants etc. The infrastructure can handle you and your family or friends no matter which weekend you chose to visit. The weather in May is much better than April so if you are planning to spend a lot of time walking around and seeing the sights that first weekend in May looks like a good choice. There are always many, many events and interesting shows, exhibits etc. going on so when the date draws near get a copy of New York or Time Out Magazine or go on www.citysearch.com and you'll get a good idea of things to do on the weekend that you'll be here. May is better of course...it's warmer. I don't think there are throngs of people clamoring to visit on Mother's Day, like you said, at least no more than usual. On Easter, many (if not all) stores will be closed, but they won't be on Mother's Day. Shopping in any touristy part of town (5th Ave, Herald Square, Canal Street, Broadway in Soho) is a nightmare year round. If you want to avoid crowds (sounds like you do) stay somewhere on the Upper East or Upper West Side, or downtown.

You have chosed a wonderful time to go. I was there during that same time-frame in 2000. The cherry blossoms should be in full bloom (they seemed to be everywhere) &amp; the weather quite nice for walking...chilly at night, but in the low 60's during the day. Enjoy your visit!!

May is one of the most delightful months to visit NYC. I used to go on business late May every year for at least 15 years. The weather is likely to be mild, but be sure to bring a raincoat or umbrella because in all those years there was NEVER a single year when it didn't rain at least once during my week there.
