I’ve been reading trip reports, etc. trying to decide. Haven’t been to NYC in years.

Want to go to the Met. Museum & the Neue Gallery. Probably Rock Center and 5th Avenue.

Transportation is good in NY but we like to walk.

Any hotel suggestions up to $500 per night?

Anything else you particularly enjoyed, restaurants, etc?

I’ll keep at the many posts here & trip advisor.

Excellent middle eastern food, and lovely place - Taboon at 52nd and 10th.

It's been a couple of years since I stayed at The Kimberly. I liked the hood and proximity to things.

We stayed in a high floor suite and enjoyed our balcony with views of the Chrysler building. We enjoyed the staff. We enjoyed the huge aquarium in the lobby. We loved the BALCONY> And enjoyed cocktails at the sky top bar.

Although we have stayed many places, this one may still hold a value. Many of our old favorites we got at a deal have upped their rates.

Timing is everything!

Hotel Surrey...looks lovely but too expensive.

With hotel cost and restaurant prices we might as well have 5 days in Paris for less, even considering air costs. Our favorite city. What we don’t like is the 7 hr. flight from Chicago BUT it is now on the table as an alternative.

I'm sure I will get booed with this suggestion, but I just drove through L ong Island City on my way to the 59th Street Bridge. Near the Queens end of the Bridge there are several outposts of chain hotels. Since you like to walk you (or I) can (in decent weather) walk to Manhattan from some of those hotels. There is also a large subway stop in the area, maybe more than one. And you are also within an easy ride by taxi or subway, to Astoria where there are many good moderate priced restaurants. (I go there every month or so to shop for food in the large Greek stores).

I would take a look at this option.

OR: Go to Paris. Do your best while enjoying the city, to make friends with folks who live in New York City. Snag an invite to stay at their place for your next trip!

Seriously, some of us who live here always wonder how people, especially families who need more than one room, manage to find a decent hotel that will not put them into debt.


If you don't like my idea, above, do lookat the Pod..it is down the street from me and looks pretty nice. I saw the (small) rooms long ago, and thought they looked ok. And you have two train lines within a block or two.

Starrs.....Belvedere looks nice. Reasonable prices except for Sat. Dec. 9th...$800.
What’s going on with that? Does not look like a $800 night property.

EKS, I have stayed occasionally at Sohotel in Nolita/LES on Broome street where they have rooms with 3 beds (2 queens, 1 twin) at a reasonable price that could work for some families. Only drawback is no elevator.

$500 sound like a lot but at certain times and conditions it's actually not that much. Actually $440 per night plus the 15% budget.

Who/how many are you? Bed configuration? Exactly what nights/how many? Any specific needs? Do you prefer traditional or modern?

Have you looked at booking.com or kayak.com?

I would not do LIC unless you are really stuck on a budget - Manhattan is always a much better choice.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Midtown East last week and paid approx. $200 a night plus taxes. The room was fairly large with two queen beds, refrigerator, microwave, free wifi, Keurig coffee maker, etc. Bathroom was spacious. Subway was across the street, but we walked everywhere. Very good Japanese barbecue just down the block. Essa Bagel around the corner.

Don’t know where that last post came from as we are only 2 people for possibly 4 nights around Dec. 6-10, dates open. Prefer king bed.
Probably midtown.
I have been looking on booking.com. and just getting our locations familiar.
Definitely not modern.

As stated above, we are still considering Paris (13th time) as we have never been there at Xmas. There are such good deals that we could go there for 5 nights for almost the same cost as 4 nights in NYC, including the airfare.
NYC sounded nice as we haven’t been there in years but there is something that also sounds wonderful about holiday lights in Paris.....decisions, decisions!

I was in Paris for Christmas last year. It was FABULOUS! I vote for Paris!

Well the dates you have picked are probably the most expensive of the whole year in NYC - so I can understand why Paris might look esp good (and I do love Paris) although I don't fly to europe for so few days. But NYC is incredibly wonderful for the holidays - but it's much better if you stay from the 17th or 18th - with hotel much more reasonable since the business travelers have left town as will many vacationers going home for Christmas - but you still have all the holiday festivities.

Have a look at the Elysee. Rooms are attractively done in traditional décor, and the room rate includes a very extensive continental breakfast served in the equivalent of a drawing room on the second floor.

Tough choice. I love both cities. I'm going to NYC specifically for the rockettes as I didn't get to see them last year. But I would choose Paris in a heartbeat for the decorations, shopping, and food. I'm not sure you can go wrong!

If you do go to Paris, go to Notre Dame to see the nativity. Simply wonderful.
