NYC- Hotels - midtown
 

We have tickets to see Wicked on April 4 in the afternoon.Now ,we are thinking of spending the night.Not sure what we want to do on Thursday.Looking for cheap hotel Wednesday night, just to sleep.Any suggestions?
I was looking at Carlton Arms...not sure if it is OK for children???

Not sure how cheap you're looking, but there is an Econo Lodge near Times Square that I have seen on my way to work. TripAdvisor has mostly decent reviews, so perhaps it's worth checking out.

APril 4 is Easter week so even cheap hotels may not be so cheap. I'd reserve something now that you can cancel and just keep looking for something better.

Carlton Arms is a bit funky for a family, but the area is certainly safe enough. I'm not sure Hotel 30/30 has any rooms that would take 3 people, but it's also reasonably priced. If you could get a reservation at an Apple Core Hotel (they have their own web site), they run major-branded hotels at reasonable prices (Red Roof Inn and the like). Most are in the Herald Square area and are all ok, just not exciting. Also, try the Wolcott. It's very reasonably priced but certainly ok for one night, but it books up fast. Also, the Hotel Edison near Times Square is more expensive than it used to be, but if you could snag a room, it's a good deal. My cousin stays at the gargantuan Milford Plaza when he's in NYC on a layover (he's a pilot), and he says it's ok.

I just stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Times Sq on 8th Ave. Might be a place to check as well.

Try the Best Western Presidential just off Times Square.

It's a small hotel. The rooms are small and basic, but they're clean and up-to-date.

Melissa, I'm sure you know about the hotel reviews on tripadvisor, but do you realize there are "candid travelers photos" there at the top near the hotels' address? They're a good gauge. You should check out the Carlton Arms and I think will answer your own question.

Don't know how many of you there are or how many beds you need, but you can get the Eastgate Tower for $198/night on Affinia.com in a studio suite. That may mean a bed for 2 and a sofabed for 2 or possibly 2 regular beds with sofabed. That's cheaper than any of the Applecore hotels (and imo nicer).

Another idea is the Travel Inn. A double double (including FREE parking) is $200 for that night plus tax. Maybe the best idea if you're driving. It's actually closer to the theater than the Eastgate (but not as much space).

Tell me more about the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square on 8th Ave. I picked up their "King Bed Evolution Room," whatever that is supposed to be, for a couple of nights -- the 4th and 5th of July. $159, $179 if you want breakfast for 2, $26 for parking. (At least that's my first holding -- 24 hour cancellation no penalty.)

In the craziest of coincidences, I noticed that the location seemed oddly familiar so I looked up some old itineraries. Well, my daughters had stayed at that exact address with a high school speech group back in 1999! (It was a Day's Inn then, and the girls didn't have much good to say about the place, so I'm hoping that the recent renovations done by the new owners are as good as how it's portrayed in their web site's photos.)

It was a dog as the Days Inn but is evidently much better now as Hilton Garden Inn.
