NYC hotels-midtown
Has anyone stayed at the New York Inn or the Park Savoy? The New York Inn seems too inexpensive for Midtown Manhattan at $97 per night. I'm not terribly familiar with NYC-is the location OK at 765 8th Avenue? We're not looking for luxury accomodations, just somewhere clean, safe and centrally located if anyone else has any suggestions. I tried the Pickwick Arms and they were booked.

I'm not familiar with the ones you mention, but one I have stayed in numerous times that meets all your criteria is the Hotel Edison -- great location in the heart of midtown, safe, and inexpensive.
|
Thanks Lisa, but the Edison is booked and so was my other choice, the Pickwick Arms. I have reservations at the New York Inn but I want to make sure its OK.
|
I have not stayed at either, but a friend recently stayed at the Park Savoy. She said it was very non-descript but clean and in a good location.

Thanks Steve-I rebooked at the Park Savoy since I have no recommendations for the New York Inn. Just tried a hotel in London without a recommendation and it was a dump!
|
I think you're being pretty unrealistic if you think $97 is too expensive for midtown Manhattan.

Christina, you lovable sweetie-pie you, read before you rant. What's the word kristi uses after "too"?

Thanks for coming to my defense Martha. I'm not living on Fantasy Island! After seeing all the $200+ hotel rates for Midtown, I was alarmed at the low rate. Recently booked a hotel in London for L69 because of the cost and it was a dump so I was trying to not duplicate the experience. The Park Savoy is $145, $135 if you pay cash.

thanks for the phone for the apts. am also looking for The Mansfield and Park Savoy on the internet without success. Do they have a web site? They are not on cheapest hotels
and not
on the one numered web site.
|
I called the Park Savoy direct at (212)245-5755 for reservations. I couldn't find them on any of my usual internet sources. I think you can book through www.reservation-services.com but I've never used them and they did not provide immediate confirmation or rates.

I spent an afternoon walking to inexpensive hotels in Manhattan that I researched on the web. There were several that I wouldn't dream of staying in and The New York Inn was one of them. I didn't go in but it looked somewhat seedy on the outside. The Edison is a good choice and I can also suggest the Wolcott or the Grand Union. The latter two should be in the $110-$130 range and are quite acceptable.

Pictures of the interior and exterior of the Park Savoy are at:

http://www.neon.net/parksavoy/index.html

You can judge for yourself.

Has anybody stayed at the Gershwin Hotel in New York? I have booked for the 25th November and would like to know what it's like before I go.

Thanks

The rooms are clean and nicely redone, the atmosphere/decor of common areas is very hip/funky and the location is good (near the Lex Ave subway line), but... I found the service to be horrendous and indifferent. I've since spoken to other travelers who had a similar experience. The first room they put us in was occupied (and a mess), we returned to the desk and were sent to a second room which had only one bed (we had specifically reserved two beds) and on the third try it was fine except there is NO air conditioning. If it's hot and you have to open the windows for ventilation prepare for noise. There is one tiny, slow elevator for a 10 or 12 story building and the wait for elevator service was often interminable. When we went to check out our paperwork (including the imprint of my credit card) was "missing". After 40 minutes of waiting I threatened to walk out in 5 minutes and cancel payment by contesting the charges (if the paperwork was ever to appear). Suddenly a manager was called and the paperwork miraculously appeared immediately. It was the worst hotel experience I've ever had and I will never again stay there or in any facility operated by the same group. When I posted my sad experience in this forum as a warning I had several responses from other people who'd had similar experiences. Be forewarned (also be aware that this was 3 years ago and they may have gotten their act together by now).

Owen
Thanks for your comments - I might see if I can find somewhere else - trouble is I'm going on 25th November and may have left it a bit late now - also I need to book for 7 people - I'll try anyway. I had a similar experience at the Best Western Manhattan last year - overflowing toilets was a daily occurence.
Thanks again
