NYC hotels booked on May 1st
 

Is there some event going on at this time? I have tried 1-4 star hotels with no luck. It only seems like a problem on the night of the 1st.

YOu are correct. My friend and I are going into NYC for the weekend april 30 until may 2 and while i have reservations at HJ on 8th avenue, I was going to try to get good last minute rate and nothing is coming up.

It is peak conference and convention time in Manhattan. There may not be one specific event. Hotel occupancy is high and hotels are expensive.

I believe there is a cancer walk going on next weekend. (Might be the Avon walk for breast cancer, or Team In Training) but I remember one of those being the weekend of May 1-2 here in NY.

The 5-boro bike tour is May 2nd (about 20-30,000 people).

Have you tried Priceline?

I'm having the same experience trying to book rooms for April 24. I have never had so little success finding good rates at hotels in New York.
