NYC Hotel with easy access to Columbia U
I will be attending training in May on the Columbia campus, specifically on W 132 St. I am looking for a hotel with easy access by bus or subway. I am hoping to keep the price to $300 plus taxes. Hotel Lucerne and the NYLO seem to be well-located, but are a little too expensive. Anything else slightly less expensive that you can recommend?
Thank you. |
Have you gone to Googlemaps, input NYU and then looked at hotels "nearby" by chance? Just a suggestion since I usually don't stay in that part of Manhattan.
|
Dukey it is not NYU, it is Columbia, where there are significantly less hotel choices.
PSKid, did you call or write the organizers of the training to see if there is a discount any where? |
Check the price of the Aloft hotel in Harlem. It's easy to get to Columbia from there, and it's a very convenient location. But to be honest, anything Midtown West that's close to a subway station will work for you. It's a quick trip up to Columbia from any hotel between 34th Street and 110th Streets on the west side.
|
Thank you for your replies. Yes, I asked about hotel discounts, but they said there were none and I am on my own in terms of finding a hotel. I am a little nervous about overspending when my employer is paying, but I don't want to stay in an inconvenient or otherwise undesirable place. But maybe any place on the #1 subway line would be okay?
|
As a NY'er I do not use hotels here, but others have recommended a number of hotels on the Upper West Side that should be near the 1 train including the Beacon Hotel.
As a former business traveler, I understand your concerns about keeping your expenses down, but you can save on meals if you chose correctly and still enjoy the food. |
Have a look at the Newton - on Broadway & 94th St. It's a reliable budget property which is right on top of the 96th St subway - and also you could just pick up a bus going up Broadway to get to Columbia in a few minutes.
This is a mid upscale residential area and there are tons of inexpensive/moderate restaurants nearby, all of the usual local shops, a couple of blocks from Central Park and you can take the 96th St crosstown bus through the park to get to Museum Mile |
It's a couple blocks wal to the 1 train but look at the park lane hotel.
|
The Park Lane Hotel is very nice. When I am in NYC I usually stay there or The Excelsior - a lovely, classic, hotel on W81st just across from the Museum of Natural History and thus directly at a subway station which is steps away. There are also buses a block away. Depending on your travel dates, it should be in your price range even including tax. Check out Trivago but sometimes one can do better booking directly with the hotel.

I know Columbia is spread out but what part is at 132nd Street?
|
That is a good point Sue. I went to HS on W134th Street and that was not near Columbia, although CCNY was a couple of blocks uptown.
|
It's been about 7 years since I stayed there, but Columbia used to have guest rooms at a really reasonable cost.
|
I followed up on your suggestions, some of which were not available on my dates. I found a Groupon for the NYLO, so I went with that. The location at 132nd St. is part of what Columbia calls its Manhattanville campus.
Thank you for your help. I may be back for more. |
That is an odd name as there another college called Manhattanville located in Westchester County.
|
There is indeed a Manhattanville campus for Columbia University and it does include W132st. However, I am under the impression that it is still under construction. It is not the same as the main campus though.

We LOVE the Beacon and would pay more for it---has full kitchenette, across the street from 24 hour knock out grocery store with yuppie take out food, room service from next door restaurant, laundry, sizable rooms, not fancy, but great location and amazingly comfortable.
Alternatively, we have heard good things about the Newton though we have never stayed there. |
There is a Rodeway Inn on West 71st Street.
