NYC hotel. Upper East Side (50th-70th), prefer under $250
 

Haven't been to NYC since '03...would appreciate any suggestions for a B and B or small hotel somewhere between 50th and 70th or even further north. Would prefer to pay under $250 (double, for wife and me)..for about 6 days.Thank you.

I don't believe your budget is realistic .. but there's a Courtyard Marriot on 92nd Street that might come in under $250??

Even small hotels like the Franklin, on 87th Street, are now "expensive."

I just stayed for 6 nights at the Affinia 50 on 50th and 3rd and would highly recommend. While not as small as a boutique hotel (it has 212 rooms), it has a small feel to it. It gets excellent reviews on TripAdvisor also. I sampled 6 nights in Sept and this is what it showed for rates:

9/4 USD 255.00
9/5 ~ 9/6 USD 342.00
9/7 USD 270.00
9/8 USD 324.00
9/9 USD 207.00

Don't forget about 13.%% tax also...Good luck with your search!

When?

If you're lookng for something through the end of August there are deals to be found on travelzoo and other sites.

If you're talking late Sept or Oct you'll have a lot of trouble with those rates.

Early December you will not find anything with a private bathroom for $250 per night. You'll have to up your budget to around $400 per night.

The Helmsley Middletown has a petit room (read a 10x12 room with private bath) for $330 and the Thirty Thirty has a room with two twins and private bath for $330 the begining of December.

I snared a ridiculously low rate at the Beekman Tower Suites for the end of October with Hotwire. We prefer Midtown, but for the rate...

I checked out the Beekman Tower and I was quoted &675 per night. Not even having the saem name helped evidently.

Is this close to the "ridculously low rate" you refer to? Or should I try Hotwire? Thanks.

If price is an object for you, then you need to find out what hotels are available in your price range first. This is the most expensive time of the year in New York (the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas), but there are some deals to be had from time to time, but the posters who have warned that you should be prepared to pay closer to $400 are correct. Good luck. Beekman Towers is wonderful, by the way.

Price is an object for everyone and anyone...no matter who they are... I personally know a billionaire who unashamedly scrutinizes everything he and his family spend for everything and anything. I will not, of course, divulge his immediately recognizable name.

To me it's laughable...but he's doggone serious. Yes, price is an object to him....BUT he is a very generous, philanthropic gentleman.


Certainly he is world renowned and he recently hosted my family, of which I am the patriarch (18 adults and children) for a lovely "reunion" luncheon. After everyone except the two of us left, he went over the bill several times and questioned the waitress on each item.

Of course, Doug, price is an object. Therefore, I'll see what I can find for what to me would be affordable.

Radio City Apartments are very basic but clean and in a good location. They are also mostly sold out for the rest of the year. And in December you won;t get them for $250

If you are not locked into the Upper East Side here are a couple of suggestions:

www.milburnhotel on the Upper West Side good location, reasonable eats and subway close by.

www.innon23rd.com delightful B&B with only 14 rooms located at 131 West 23rd Street - nice breakfast included.

www.thenvoyclub.com all-suite hotel at 377 East 33rd Street between Murray Hill & Gramercy Park. Plenty of affordable eats and subway close by.

We enjoyed each of these lodgings and thought each very good value for your $'s, at least in NYC. Will enjoy another visit in October.

Sandy, have you looked at the prices of rooms at the Envoy Club in early December? Studios start at $718 per night.

Last night I booked a 3 night stay toward the end of October and the rate was $289.00 a night. My son lives in NYC and he has just said hotel prices are insane so I thought that was quite good and so am quite happy with that booking.

Just had a quick look for December at The Envoy Club and found the studio available from 12/4 thru 12/7 (3 nights) $1,077.00. Probably varies on the dates you want.

So Stu T it is all going to depend on your dates but it appears the sooner you can book something the better as I am sure prices will only continue to climb.

I am sure December is lovely in NYC but perhaps you can delay and go after Christmas when hopefully hotel prices will come down.

Please tell me more about the Affinia 50 (for 2 adults & 20-year old daughter). How would it compare to the Courtyard Midtown East, or the Flatotel, or Blakely , or Residence Inn Times Square, or Intercontinental Barclay? Is there another hotel in the Affinia chain that is better?
