NYC hotel room shortage in August?
We go to NYC once or twice a yr and usually can find good deals on the Lower West Side. Have tried now for a couple days to find something for 2 people, 3 days, around $150. Nothing! Tried hotels we have stayed at before and sites we have used before. Nary a room
to be found under $200 Aug 23-26. Is there some huge event going on then? Suggestions? Thanks Sue |
Try Pod 39. They have a double bed room for $555 [$648 with tax] for the 3 nights and a Queen for $635 [$740 with tax]
Great location in Murray Hill area. http://www.thepodhotel.com/ |
No special events, just supply and demand at work, NYC had 50+ million visitors last year so no need for hotels to lower rates during a usually busy season, BTW, $200 per night is actually pretty low for NYC and other major cities, too.
Hope you find something that works for you |
Thanks. Will keep trying. We were just there in April and found a great deal for $150 night and same f

Sorry, phone slipped. But we paid $150 a night just 3 mo ago and about $170 a night 9 months ago and that was for a bigger room! Hope we haven't used up our good deal luck... Thanks

We've had good luck using Priceline. If you haven't tried that before, it helps to read betterbidding and biddingfortravel first.

the Milford is having a summer sale now, for your dates they have queen rm for $145 and king rm for $165 .
Also, Travelzoo.com has several offers posted for NUC for August under $200. hurry though, their offers come and go. |
Be aware that the Milford Sale is only going on for 10 days, and it started a few days ago. BOOK NOW if you want it.

Thanks!

Agree that anything under $200 a night is a deal - except for Jan/Feb - when prices are always very low. I haven't seen any counts - but from traveling through Times Square many mornings my impression is that there are just a LOT of tourists - as in elbow to elbow on the sidewalks and VERY long line for tour buses.
Agree to try Priceline - but make sure you reserve something cancelable first in case you don;t get anything. |
No shortages, but rates are going up after several years. Getting a $150 room in Manhattan even in August is fairly unlikely unless you happen upon a special sale. Note that the Milford is still undergoing a renovation in the lobby, but the rooms are done.
|
Let me retract that. MOST of the rooms are done, and it's likely they will be renting out the un-updated rooms for $145.
|
In fact there is a total of more than 90,000 hotel rooms in NYC an increase of almost 25% since 2006.
|
I stayed at the Milford in March and had booked it during one of their sales. I got a room for $159 and it was a nice newly renovated room.
|
BTW, I have a room booked at the Clarion Park Ave. for August 1, total with taxes and fees is $159. I booked it a month ago on their website, and not during a sale. I have been looking ever since but have not found anything for less than that with taxes and fees included.
|
Yes, but March prices are not going to be the same as those in August.
|
Well, actually they are, at the Milford. read my earlier post above.
|
Milford Plaza is showing their renovated rooms starting at $174 per night for those dates. They do no show any prices for unrenovated rooms - so either they are all booked or the final rooms are in the process of renovation.

There are several very good options on Hotwire.com one even at $121 (3* downtown soho likely in the financial district with 90% thumbs up rating). The other that looks good to me is $133 3* Chelsea area with 100% thumbs up. Thumbs up rating imo is important.
Betterbidding.com has lists of hotwire hotesl by area/ star level/ amenities to help you figure it out. |
Yesterday the rooms at Milford were the prices I posted above when I checked, $145 queen, $155 king, so it looks like that summer sale is over, and now they are offering a 35% off sale. The OP did check this thread yesterday so I hope they got the summer sale rates if they went with the Milford, but the 35% of rates are still in their budget.
