NYC - hotel recommendations
 

I am planning a trip to NY with my daughter and her friend, 15 years old and my older daughter. Can you give me a good recommendation for a reasonably priced hotel would like to stay around $200 will go up to $250 that is in a convenient location. They want to do shows, shopping and eating.

Four people in one room for $200 or even $250 (close to $300 with taxes) is going to be difficult at best. Have you read the hundreds of hotel posts here yet? Or entered New York hotels in the search function?

You don't say when you are going which makes a big difference. If it's any month besides maybe January-March, I would increase your budget by $100 a night. You can save lots of money by eating cheap (easy to do in NYC), getting discount theater tickets, and not shopping so much but instead just exploring that great city.

Agree - when you will be here is very important.

Also, many NYC Hotel rooms have only 1 double bed - those with 2 beds are larege and usually more expensive - even for "budget" chains.

You can have a look at Travelzoo to see if they have any deals fo ryuor dates - but if you give us a little more info people may know of some super bargains.

There's shopping and eating all over NYC. Shows are in the west 40's-50's/Times Square area where hotels generally get a premium price or not very nice. The Radiocityapartments.com is a popular budget suite hotel in the area but usually booked.

I would look on quikbook.com kayak.com and travelzoo.com and see what you can find in budget for 4 people and then look at reviews on tripadvisor. There are enough hotels with rooms with 2 double beds; a few have 2 queen beds and then there are suite hotels like apts. with small kitchens.

The Metro hotel has family suites with 2 connected bedrooms and includes breakfast. It's near Macy's.

The Moderne was pretty reasonable and in your price range when we stayed there a couple summers ago.

Excellent location. Close to David Letterman's, numerous subway stops, restaurants, and a short walk to Central Park and shops on 5th Ave.

Can't seem to find their site anymore, but TA has some mixed reviews. I personally found it very budget friendly and in a can't be beat locale for the price. TA's price projection looks a bit high, to me though.

I think you will be hard pressed to find anything in that price range. I just spent 5 days in NY the end of May. That is considered a "low season". It was very difficult to find anything under $340+tax. Luckily, at the last minute (literally one day before we departed) I received an email on a sale at Kimpton hotels. We were able to book a KING bedded room for $200+tax (with the friday night being $278+). Upon arrival the hotel upgraded us to a room with two beds, otherwise we (two ladies) were prepared to share the king bed in order to save $100 per night. Friends stayed at the Paramount during the same trip paying $270+ for rooms with 2 beds and reported that the hotel is going downhill fast. The rooms are tiny and the baths are even smaller. The price of NY hotel rooms has really jumped this year. Above suggestions are all good, but do be prepared to increase your budget.

So far, I have now booked a room at the Ivy Terrace. I am hoping that this will be a good choice for myself and two teenage girls. It will cost us $300 a night but by the time I started to actually nail down my dates, I am feeling that I am lucky to get this price. We are going Jule 31 to Aug. 4. It has gotten good reviews. If anyone has any other thoughts, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

Two years ago, like you, I took my daughter and her friend to NYC. The purpose of the trip was to tour NYU, but we spent an additional 4 days there to see the rest of the city, do some shopping, and have fun. Anyways through priceline.com I booked the Ramada for approximately $200 a night. It was in a great location at 30th and Lexington. This was my first time to NY and my first time staying at a Ramada, so I thought for $200 a night I would get a nice room. I know better now. If your expecting the same accommodations that you get in other cities for the same price you will be unpleasantly surprised. We did have 2 double beds, but the room was so small the three of us could not move around without bumping into each other. The good part was that there was so much to see and do in NY that we spent very little time in our room.

Our family liked the Embassy Suites. You'll have a front room with an extra TV, so the teens can have their own space. Get two beds in the bedroom, for you and your older daughter. One pullout sofa in the front room, and you can fashion another one on the floor for your 15 year old daughter.

The rate is very reasonable, and includes a full hot/cold breakfast buffet.

The location is right by the Statue of Liberty, ground zero, and Wall Street. We walked from there to Greenwich Village, SoHo, etc. Took a cab uptown.

Have you check kayak.com? There seem to be a fair number of rooms under $300/night including the the Embassy Suites (free hot breakfast), Grand Hyatt, Le Parker Meredian, Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard Upper East Side, Courtyard (866 3rd Ave.), Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel, Millennium Hilton, and more. There are also a bunch of Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Best Western, etc. for under $300.

I don't know anything about the Ivy Terrace, but I just wanted to highly recommend the Web sites mclaurie lists. My understanding is that late July/early August is low season because it's so hot, so you should be able to find a reasonable rate on hotels.

When looking at rates be sure to check 2 things:

Is tax included - this can add a lot to the rate

It sounds like there are four of you (you, 2 daughters and daughter's friend) - be sure the price you're being quoted covers 4 people and not just 2.

This is a good point - taxes on hotel rooms in NYC, like all big cities in the US at least, are around 14% (city tax, state tax, hotel tax, etc.)
