NYC Hotel Close to Saks/Bloomies/MoMa?

My requirements are pretty simple.
I just want a hotel ($500/nt) where I can walk to Saks/Bloomies/MoMa.

Which hotel?

At that price range The Pennisula or St Regis. There are many others that are cheaper.

At that price, you probably could get a nice suite at the Michelangelo. We like it there. Good location. Kind of intimate.

Is this just for you - or does a larger room/suite matter? There are a bunch of upscale hotels in that area - so it would help to know if you value size of room? modern or traditional? boutique or larger hotel?

Ritz Carlton Central Park is incredibly nice. Rooms start at abt $600 (before taxes). It'd be a 10-15 min. walk to the 3 places you mentioned. I've stayed there twice and also once down the street(west) at 6 Columbus which is more like $200-$300/night. It's directly across the street from Time Warner Center, which has some good shopping as well http://www.theshopsatcolumbuscircle.com/ From 6 Columbus, you'd add about 5 minutes to your walks to MoMA, Bloomingdale's and Saks.
We really love both hotels. Totally different vibes, of course.
(Have brunch at the nearby Norma's!)

Thanks!
It does not have to be $500-$700!! I just meant that I would go that high if I had to.

Any other recs?

I need a good sized room (not small)with a good sized bathroom( again, not small) but I do not need a suite. I would take a suite if I could find one but I do not need it. I do not care if it is traditional or modern; boutique or large hotel but I do tend to prefer traditional in a large, well established hotel.

Thanks, again!

You might check out the Kimberly between Lex and 3rd on 50th. some friends stayed there recently and found it pleasant. TA has pretty good reviews.

You have a range of recos here from a 3* to a 5* hotel. It would help ifyou could define which yu are looking for (why pay for a 5* of you just want a basic 3?).

Waldorf Astoria or the Barclay Intercontinental should suit. Very close to Saks and not far from the others.

nyt,
I want 5 star. I do not want a "basic 3". I thought that was clear from my OP when I said $500. Or is a "basic 3" $500 in NYC?

Waldorf is a little long in the tooth unless it has recently been renovated.

Where is Barclay?

Is there a Four Seasons?

Ritz sounds good.

What about The Plaza? It used to be good ( 25 years ago)
It's probably $1,000/nt.

There is no room at the Four Seasons in your price range ... Well perhaps at $700. The Paza s not really worth the current prices. The Peninsua would probably be best for you, or the Pierre. But $500 per night does not necessarily get you a 5 star hotel in NYC. Hence the discussion.

This is getting crazy.
Ok.... $500 is not 5 star. Maybe I am looking for 4 star. Let's forget about stars & focus on the price.

Let's go back to the beginning:
I want a hotel w/in walking distance of Saks/Bloomies/MoMa.
I am prepared to pay b/t $500-$700(before tax)
But, if you can recommend a good hotel for less than $500 that's fine too.

Ha, $500=5 star in NYC? No way! There are plenty of mid price point hotels in that area that can meet your needs. Hilton, Sheraton, Renaissance, Omni Berkshire are all ones to look into. If you want to stay in Times Square, it is only a short walk and you can stay at the Marriott Marquis, Paramount, etc.

Saks and MOMA are very close to each other. Bloomingdales is a bit further north & east. The nicest hotels near Saks/MOMA:

St. Regis
Peninsula
The NY Palace
The Chambers

All but the St. Regis should be in your budget. For your budget, you could get one of the nicest rooms at the Palace or a lower end room at the Peninsula. The Chambers really isn't in the same league, but is well located and more modern. The Four Seasons , closer to Bloomies but still fine location wise will be over $700 as will the Plaza, the Pierre, the Sherry Netherland (all around 57-59 st. and Fifth ave.) 2 under the radar options nearer Bloomingdales are the Lowell hotel and the Plaza Athenee. Both will be pushing the upper limits of your budget.

The Barclay Intercontinental is in need of renovation and not worth your considering imo. Oyster.com is a good website to have a look at photos of many of these (but not all) if you don't know it.

Thanks, everybody!

For what it is worth, I like Omni in Montreal. In addition to a few of the others you have suggested, I will look @ Omni NY. Where exactly is it located?

I have Hilton, Sheraton & Marriott points so is it worth looking at an upgradeed room in any of those hotels? Marriott seems to be out of my neighborhood...Times Square may be too far away from Saks/Bloomies/MoMa for me.

Thanks, again!

The Omni Berkshire is a nice 4* hotel. It's a block and a half from Saks. I think the Palace is nicer. http://www.oyster.com/new-york-city/...rkshire-place/

On travelocity you can put in an address (ie the address of Saks) and the search will then bring up the hotels that are closest. So that's one way you could do it, find say the six closest available hotels in your price range and come back here to ask about them.

I stayed at the Omni Berkshire this autumn. It's a great hotel, nicely situated, NEW interiors, higher end finishes and furnishings, traditional/not stuffy, lots of cream, white, gray, etc., large rooms, large bathroom, thick towels, good soap, great storage (which you won't need), good bar, very competent Concierge, got it for around $375 or so before taxes and fees. Loved it and loved that it was a lot of bang for the buck. We were comfortable in black tie there as well as in jeans and boots. The Palace is much more formal but the Omni feels less fuddy-duddy to me. However, if you're a Plaza lover from the early '90's I'd say the Palace would be more what you might be hoping for. (I stayed at the Plaza often enough in the old days and I still prefer the Omni).

And suddenly, a distant beeping grew in intensity and volume -- an alarm of some sort . . .
