NYC hotel around $190
Hello,
I am currently looking for quiet hotel in NYC. Our Budget is $190 per night for two. Breakfast will be a plus. It is for my parents who will visit this nice city in september 2005. They need a quiet hotel to sleep well!!! My brother lives E. 9th street (lower east side). It could be good if the hotel is near this place but not compulsory. |
Can't say specifically what's nearby - but NYC is not quiet (unless you're used to a big city). So perhaps you want a quiet hotel - vs a trendy party hotel. Or perhaps you just need a quiet room to avoid street noise (high floor or facing courtyard) in a regular hotel.
If you want to spend $190 total - including taxes etc - you may want to search Priceline to get more for your money. |
E. 9th is actually the East Village, not lower east side, but in any case, there are few hotels in that area. Hotels in the murray Hill area may work (E. 30s) and also midtown south. From these locatons it's a quick subway or bus ride to Union Sq/14th St. The HSleburne Murray Hill sometimes has rates in the range, it doesn't include breakfast but all rooms have a kitchen or kitchenette, and there are many delis in the area to grab a quick bite in the morning. Check the Affinia website for special orfferes. They also have some other hotels, that may work as well. The AValon in midtown south has a continental breakfast and is a nice hotel. A few years ago I landed it on priceline for some visitors and it worked out really well (I live near E. 9th st). There's also the Marcel, and Park SOuth.
Priceline would probably be the best value. If you were to try priceline, check biddingfortravel.com for more info. I think the midtown south area would be the area to bid on. IN the village, near Washington Sq Park there's the Washington Sq hotel, although it gets very mixed reviews despite a great location. There's also the Howard Johnson Express Inn on E. Houston (lower East side) that would probably be in your budget. There are also some hotels in the Grammercy Park area (E. 20s) that would be ocnvenient. |
Tnat Shelburnem not HSleburne. CHeck tripadvisor for more hotel comments.

For clarification, the hotel MFNYC is trying to tell you about is the Shelburne Murray Hill. It's owned by the Affinia group (Affinia.com) and is an all suite hotel with kitchenettes. As she says, they should check the specials offers at the Affinia website and sometimes easyclicktravel.com has good deals on this group of hotels.
The Four Points Chelsea Sheraton might be an option. Also check the Inn on 23 st and the Park South Hotel (parksouthhotel.com) |
I'm having problems typing today! The Shelburne actually isn't really all suites. I've seen 3 types of rooms there. The smallest being a regular type room with 1 queen (I think it was a queen), with a efficiency kitchen in the room (along 1 wall, not a separate room or area), this room is on the small side. The 'studio' suite which again is 1 room, but a bit bigger than the regular room, with a tiny kitchen (I guess that's what makes it a suite), and their one bedroom, which is quite roomy, has a bedroom with either 2 doubles or a king, and a living/dining area with a sofa bed, and it also has the small kitchen also. I have found good rates for this hotel on travelhero.com.
Check tripadvisor.com for more comments on any of the hotels mentioned here. |
What about the Union Square Inn on E. 14th? It gets pretty good reviews on tripadvisor (with a few negatives). Apparantly continental breakfast is included in the rates and it is half a block from the Metro. Perhaps your brother could check it out and see what he thinks. (I haven't stayed there but checked my guidebook for you.)

Because breakfast can be had so cheap everywhere (bagel and coffee for under $3 per person) I would kick the breakfast qualifyer out the window. Love the Shelbourne Murray Hill. |
Very few places in NYC provide free "breakfast". A very few offer free coffee and rolls - but as other said - you can get better than this in a deli for a couple of dollars - and a hot breakfast in any local coffee shop for way less than at the hotel.
The only place I'm aware of that has a free real breakfast is Embassy Suites - and don;t know if this is true in Manhattan. |
Second the nod for Affinia properties -each time we have stayed there we have been pleased. We also recently booked a decent studio apartment through www.metro-home.com that was next door to Affinia's Eastgate Tower on E 39th near 2d Ave. The parents may enjoy that, as they have lots of space, a kitchen for breakfast (and take out options galore in the neighbrhood, as well as a Gristedes grocery store half a block away.) There is a 24 hour doorman and they could also just walk a few steps to the corner to jump on the 2d avenue bus that runs down to the East Village, not have to deal with the subway.
