NYC Hotel Advice
 

I will be visiting NYC on 12/28. I haven't been there in a couple of years; therefore, I am not sure if to go with the boutique hotel trend(W,Hudson) or stick with what we know (Loews,Drake,Waldorf). I also got a great rate on the Soho Grand; is it worth not staying midtown. Please let me know, I need to book my room right away.

It would help to know the 'great rate' at the Soho Grand -what is it?

Hard to know exactly what you want; but personally I can't stand the Shrager hotels (Hudson, Paramount) which give very, very little for the money, questionable security, in exchange for their claim that you're cool if you stay there. NY hotel prices in general are very good right now, so you can really have a wide choice. The Soho Grand would be fine if you want to be downtown (I like it, and it's quiet at night) and don't mind the long ride post-theater. If you want something theater district, avoiding the bombardment of Times Sq., how about the Essex House (great deal on Central Park with Internet prices), or the lovely, under-recognized Michelangelo, on 7th and 51st? The W Union Sq is supposed to be nice, if you want that different area.

I would second the Michelangelo--we received charming, personalized service there, and the room was great, as is the location.

The SoHo Grand is more like the Chinatown Grand, based on its location. Great hotel, but probably not the best location for you if you're used to the activity and convenience of midtown. At night it's like a tomb around the "SoHo" Grand. <BR><BR>The Loew's on Lex is now the Metropolitan, by the way.

I think the Soho Grand is a great place to stay. Soho has tons of stuff going on with lots of great restaurants, stores and clubs. Also walking distance to the village. You can also walk to Chinatown (it's not in chinatown) and little italy. Midtown is a quick subway ride. I find midtown overly congested althoug Soho attracts large crowds too but not close to midtown, especially on week days.

I would stay away from the boutique hotels. The Waldorf is a wonderful choice. Great service, wonderful location especially around holiday time.
