When? What is your budget? (Dates largely determine costs.) How many people?

Without more info it's hard to give a useful answer.

There are 2 of us and we would like to stay at an upscale hotel near the heart of things(fifth ave area) that is not extremely expensive-maybe $250 a night. There is probably not such a place!

Upscale at $250 a night isn't gonna work in NYC.

Prices fluctuate dramatically depending on date. I've seen some nice boutique hotels available for $199/night or less, but if you're coming between now and end of June, that's not likely to happen. Also know that in NYC "boutique" often equates to miniscule rooms, esp. at the cheaper prices. Also know that the very trendiest boutique hotels are not in what would normally be considered a "convenient" location (ie central in midtown) but would be in hipper areas like Soho, the meatpacking district or the lower east side.

The Distrikt is a newish boutique hotel in midtown getting rave reviews on tripadvisor and might be available for ~ $250/night. The Bryant Park is another to check out.

If you shop carefully you can get a decent boutique hotel for $250 at some times of the year - but that won;t cover upscale at any time. Except for Jan/Feb upscale would be $500 per night and up - sometimes very up.

When are you coming - it will make a big difference in price.

You can try looking at travelzoo.com - but no more than 90 days out - so you know what hotel you're getting.
