NYC - Help me plan a special night

Need a special restaurant - My husband and I will be in NY for one night in January celebrating his birthday. We have tickets to The Producers (St. James Theatre)and are looking for a special place to eat dinner afterwards. I've been told that it is very difficult to get a cab and that it might be easier to stay in the theatre district. I've also been told that the theatre district restaurants aren't the best.

We don't care where the restaurant is - just looking for a special place with great food. We'll be dressed up (suit, dress, etc.) and would need reservations around 11:00/11:15 pm. Firebird Restaurant (in the theatre district) was recommended to me. If anyone's been there, I'd love to hear about it. Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Definitely get out of the theater district and head to the many great midtown restaurants such as Daniel. Check the all-caps, top rated options in Zagat's. You can't go wrong.

Check my response on your first posting of this question.
I'm not sure how many choices you'll have at that hour! If you decide on a place out of the theater district, it won't be that easy to get a cab. And, by the time you get to the restaurant, it very well may be 11:30 or later.

Firebird might be a good option. It is in the theatre district, has Russian food and is really something to behold inside.

Sorry -- now that I read your post more carefully, I see that Firebird has already been recommended to you.

Daniel or Atelier are great choices. They are not in the theater district but just walk one block east to catch a cab.It is not that bad. Both of these resturants are about a five minute cab ride.Ateiier is in the ritz
carlton on cps and daniel is on madison and 65th.Both of these are great choices.Be sure to make a reservation. You will probably be able to get one bcause you are dinning late.
Enjoy

DB Bistro Moderne - 55 W. 44th between 5th & 6th. A Daniel Boulud restaurant. Wonderful design & menu.

Esca - 402 W. 43rd @ 9th Ave.-Mario Batali's seafood restaurant (he also has Babbo). Stark atmosphere but great fish.

I have eaten at both places and they are both excellent. I would say to go with whichever is closest to the theater & has a kitchen serving food that late. I wouldn't try to get out of the area at that hour, especially if the weather is bad.

Check out the web site of my favorite restaurant, Rene Pujol. The food is wonderfully prepared and the service is elegant but not snooty. They have a prix fixe menu that is awesome. At lunch prices, it is an unbelievable bargain but the dinner price seems reasonable for the quality, service and ambience. I just love this place! It is within walking distance of the theaters.
