NYC Help

Hi. I will visiting NYC later this month for the first time. Staying at the Hilton Towers between 53rd and 54th on 6th Ave (Ave of the Americas.) Any thoughts on this area, particularly at night. Is there much activity and people around at all hours? Also, after what time is it best to avoid the subway on the main routes in Manhatten? I want to either do the Sunset Circle Line Tour or take the Staten Island Ferry after dark. Any advice on the best route to/from the 1-9 subway at 50th and Broadway, again, primarily at night. Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Mr. X:

You are in a great spot! There will be more people walking around then you can shake a stick at!! Very safe..but pick-pockets know that this is where the tourists are so....watch your pockets!
Staten islan Ferry should be fine, don't wait too long to ride it, just go just after rush hour so you can get back to enjpy the rest of the City!
JOHN

New York City in general is quite safe, and most parts of Manhattan, including the area where you will be staying, are very safe. You could walk around there any hour of the day or night without worrying --- no need to plot a special route to your subway stop. The subways are filled with people into the early hours of the morning. The only time I would avoid them is during rush hour. If you're concerned, ride the middle car, where the conductor stands --- that place is marked with a yellow sign on the platform. The Times Square area, as well as Downtown (roughly between 14th St. and Canal St., which includes the Village, Soho, Chinatown, etc) has lots of street life late into the evening.

Area is as safe as any and there will always be plenty of people around day and evening. To get to the 50th St subway station, #1 or #9. - walk south on 6th to 50th St. Make a right and go west on 50th to Broadway. First subway entrance you will come to will be for UPTOWN trains. Cross Broadway for entrance to DOWNTOWN trains. Last night went to a free concert at the World Trade Center. At end of concert walked down to Battery Park and took the ferry to Staten Island. Made the 9:30 ferry going - crowded. Came back on the 10 pm ferry - just as crowded. There were hundreds of people taking the 10:30 back to Staten Island. Took the #1 local home to the upper west side. The train was full of people to the extent that it was standing room only in the middle cars of the train. Always plenty of people around in NYC. If you indicate date(s) you will be in the city can tell you what free events are taking place in the financial district so you can combine that with the ferry ride. Last night it was a concert featuring the New York Pops Orchestra.

Make sure you get a pastrami sandwich at the Carnegie Deli (and cheescake while your at it). It will be a stone's throw from your hotel and it is truely a worthwhile NY experience even for a native like myself.

RQF is probably talking about concerts either at Castle Clinton (downtown, Battery Park, the place where you buy Statue of Liberty tickets) or near the World Trade Center.
Look up info on all of these at www.downtownny.com

Free concerts also at:
Lincoln Center
(www.lincolncenter.org)

Summerstage in Central park
www.summerstage.com

Classical concerts at Bryant Park sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art
www.bryantpark.org
(also free classic movie screenings Monday nights)
