NYC hair salons- Midtown
 

Hi. My husband and I will be in NYC the last week in August. We are staying at Courtyard Marriott in Times Square. 114 W. 40th Street. Any suggestions on reasonable hair stylists? Thanks.

what dollar amount do you consider reasonable for what service - shampoo and a blow out? single process color? highlights?
you can get a shampoo and a blow out for anywhere from $25. to $125. - the low end in the chain places like supercuts, the high end in upscale midtown salons like Roy Teeluck on W. 57th St.

I want a cut, color or possibly foils.
Do not want to pay more than $150.00.

MP, I am looking for a middle of the range salon. Not a place like supercuts.

There is a chain of shops around that area...Jean Louis David. You can watch through the window to see if you like what they do. No appointments, prices posted in the window....lots of young folks come in on the lunch hour. Since there are several, check for addresses online.

You generally can not get a cut and color for $150 in a good place. Cuts usually run from ~$100-175 Single process color from $100. Highlights start ~$200.

I have heard of a place nearish your hotel area that might be worth checking.

I like the consistency of quality at Vidal Sassoon, but the price will be higher than what you're looking for. They have never let me down!

Try Salon Ziba on 57th Street. I think their prices are reasonable and they are trustworthy--NOT a chain.

You might also look at citysearch (www.citysearch.com) they have lots of listings and consumer reviews and sponsored ads and you can sort by neighborhood. Also try the www.nymag.com sight - NY Magazine's site for their best of NY listings. You will probably be better off price wise getting out of midtown and finding a smallish place downtown that will be more in your price range. but it will be tough - Mclaurie's advice, as always, seems dead on to me.

There's a Jean Louis David on the corner of 46th and 6th, but the last time I went there, I swore I wouldn't go back. Sorry I can't help you with a recommendation for something in that area.

I go to the Jean Louis David on Broadway 37th, and have always been pleased with the cut and style. The prices are reasonable and all of the stylists there are highly skilled. They also have a color specialist on staff as well.

The location is pretty close to your hotel, just walk down Broadway.

Agree with mclaurie that $150 will not get you into a quality place. Except for chains I haven;t seen prices that low for years.

I get my haircut a Salon Kiara on 53rd and Madison. A guy name Sammy cuts my hair. He always does a nice job. The place is usually bustling with both men and women.

It costs me about $41. I couldn't tell you what they charge women.

There is a ubiquitous chain of haircutting places in Manhattan called Jean Louis David. There are at least 5 that I know of between 34th and 57th. I used to go there but found it to be to hit or miss with the quality. One guy near my old office did a consistently great job. But, he usually had 3 or 4 people deep waiting for him while everyone else was free.

If you're looking for something different for your husband, you might want to check out "The Art of the Shave" on Madison and 46th. Think it's like $75 for a haircut and shave. Definately a nice indulgence.

I just got a book (Amazon.com) by Rob Grader called "The Cheap Ba*tard's Guide to NYC". (If you read my posts, you will see why I bought it..)

It has about 10 pages on Hair, Beauty, etc - and names many places (One Page is titled, Fancy Places and Not-So Fancy Prices) who run training programs for their students who are well-supervised.
