NYC Hair Salons
Hi:
I am a French woman just moved to NYC. I have short curly hair and would like to find a good salon to cut my hair but I do not wish to spend 100s of dollars. Can anyone have recommendations for me? Also, if you know of a French salon, I would prefer as I think the styles are different between NYC and France.
Thanks!
Elodie

Try the Frederic Fekkai salon on 57th Street. I use Jean Patrick and he does a great job on my wavy hair. Cost is about $150.

Any salon on 106th street and Broadway going up to Columbia University way can do your hair for a reasonable price $40-60. The neighborhood is mixed but most of the owners are Dominican. Not to stereotype people but most of them have curly hair. If you bring a picture of how you want your hair to be they will accommodate you.

I think in NY that you definitely get what you pay for...in this case. On the Upper East side, around 57th Street,a couple of places in Soho/West Village, you will find places that have excellent, talented hairdressers..but,as my husband(who is a hair colorist) says, the French and the English are trained better so you may not get what you are used to in Paris. The best advice, and this was given to me upon arriving in NY years ago in need of a current and good haircut...Stop and ask people that you meet/see that have a haircut that you like, and ask them for recommendations..Take magazine photos with you when you go to the salon and make appointments for consultations, good hairdressers will consult without fees.Good luck~

Check the phone book for a Jacque Dessange salon, maybe on 57th street..

3/4 (if not all) of the stylists at Frederic Fekkai are trained in Paris and most are French. Again, give them a call (ask for Jean Patrick).

I just got my hair cut and went to a salon on a friend's recommendation. In turn, I'd highly recommend them-Ouidad (7th ave b/w 54th and 55th streets). As a fellow curly head, I can appreciate the struggle to find a salon that you're happy with. Check out ouidad.com. For the first time in my life, I love my hair.

Yes! I second the Ouidad nomination. Absolutely the best for curly hair. They do a 'carve & slice' method that you won't find anywhere else. If Ouidad (I think she is French) or Cristos cut your hair, it will be more expensive. Ask for Vincent, cost is about $104. But, once you have gone a few times, the maintenance will be less frequent (your curly hair will grow into the cut). Visit the website--www.ouidad.com. Product is expensive, but worth the $$. Be prepared to wait several weeks for an appointment.

Merci! I will try. I would like to try Fekkai but the thought of $150+ for hair is ludicrous. Sorry to the woman who posted such suggestion...
I will share any success I have...
Elodie
