Nyc-Greenmarket at Union Square

I'm coming tonight with my 18 year old niece and her mom, my sister (their 1st time to NYC). I read that there is a greenmarket at Union Square--is that worth going to see and would you suggest walking around SOHO AND GREENWICH VILLAGE-can you tell briefly the characteristics of each? Thanks again!

The greenmarket is fabulous!

Look at the foodsofny.com website. They started the "Walking and Tasting Tours" in Greenwich Village. It's a WONDERFUL experience. They now have tours of other areas as well.

Starrsville, does the greenmarket run all day? I am trying to set the itinerary--we only have the full day tomorrow to show them as much as possible, so I am trying to map it out, staying at the Belvedere on 49th near the theaters. I want them to see SOHO, GREENWICH VILLAGE (is that the same as the West Village?) and Canal Street, Staten Island Ferry, Rockefeller Center, Central Park (we can probably do that on Sunday a.m, as our flight back does not leave til 1 p.m. so we are going to leave for LGA at 11 a.m. (is 2 hrs. early enough to leave for airport before flight? ) Thx for any extra tips!!

I googled for you -
http://www.unionsquarejournal.com/greenmarket.htm

Limited vendors this time of year. Still worth a stroll through - but nothing like the spring/summer experience.

I did the Greenwich tasting tour one January on a freezing day - 9 degrees I believe. It was still wonderful. I'm not sure you want to spend that much time on a tour - but I can guarantee they would love it. Or, do the Central Village/SoHo tour. Take some pressure off you to play "tour guide" and they will have a blast.

Check the foodsofny website out at least.

The Lower East Side Tenement museum tour would be a great option for y'all too. Take the subway down, walk to Chinatown and Canal Street. Eat some Italian. Do the ferry. Head back uptown for Rock Center. Take a carriage ride in Central Park.

Up early for the Greenmarket to start the day.

I live in NYC and would not bother with the Union Square Greenmarket at this time of year. Very few vendors with what seems to be produce left over from the Fall harvest. I actually went once in the winter and found only a few stands with nothing but potatoes and apples! Nothing like the spring-summer-autumn experience!
