NYC - Good dessert spot
 

I'm meeting my parents up in NYC and would like to find any good place to pick up desert and a couple glasses of wine after the their play lets out. I am hoping for something that is not too touristy, preferably in Midtown or lower UWS. Since I would be going for just desert, I don't want to feel pressured to order any entrees. Price really isn't too much of a concern.

Upper west side:<BR>Cafe Lalo, 83rd street between Brodaway and Amsterdam is a dessert cafe with about 100 different cakes, pies, etc (not made on the premises, but all are good). I don't think they serve any 'real food" (maybe brunch/sandwiches) so there's no pressure to order . Lots of coffee drinks, not sure about wine

On the UWS try Cafe Mozart, 70th between B'way and Columbus. Its a very mellow place, much less busy than Lalo, which was made a destination after You've Got Mail. Mozart has the most amazing chocolate desserts and they make some good coffee too. Decidely untourist.

If they prefer wine with their dessert rather than coffee, a nice wine bar is Morrell's wine bar near Rockefeller (on 49th between 5th & 6th).

Vong, at 54th and 3rd, had a bar area where people without reservations can sit at nice little tables and eat or drink or just have coffee and dessert. Their passion fruit souffle was by far the BEST desert I've ever had in my life.

"My Most Favorite Dessert Company" is located in midtown, between Sixth Avenue and Broadway on 45th Street. Great desserts, but really only feasible for after theater visits on Saturday evenings. The rest of the week they close at 10 pm, or on Fridays, they close prior to sundown.

If you want a really great place for dessert and coffee, you can't go wrong with the cafes in the Village. My favorites are Lanterna de Vittorio on MacDougal between W4th and W3rd (great in the wintertime because of the two story fireplace), Cafe Reggio (MacDougal between W3rd and Minetta Lane) and Cafe Sha Sha on Hudson Street just north of Christopher (great garden for a summer cappuccino).
