NYC gift ideas
 

My son will be interning in NYC from Jan thru May (He's 21). I'd like to get him some Christmas gifts that are NYC related. Show tickets, coffee mug, whatever. Any suggestions would be VERY much appreciated.

There are a number of websites that sell NYC souvenirs but I think practical things are better. Here's one

Last Christmas Zagats on line had a package of NYC books I got for gifts for kids heading to NYC - it had the restaurant guide, a shopping guide, a nightlife guide, theater guide - etc, so that might be a good package one to get if they still offer online. they also let you put your own packages together still I believe. Subscriptions to New York magazine - he can change and have shipped home after - when my daughter moved there, I got her a Dunkin Donuts and a Starbucks card and put x amount of dollars on them so she could always grab a coffee/snack and she loved that - they sell them at their stores and maybe even online and you can add money to them afterwards if you want to, or they can, when they use up whatever dollar amount you first put on it - shefound it useful b/c she didn't always have the cash on her or didn't have to run to the ATM.

I'd do a subscription to Time Out New York, instead of New York Magazine (TONY is geared toward a younger audience) and a street atlas for what ever borough he will be living in. The Zagat NYC pack is also a very good idea.

If he is in Manhattan, get the Not For Tourists Guide To New York City 2005 from Amazon. It's a great little book for someone moving to Manahttan who needs basic info - locations of grocery stores, ATMs, post offices, etc

I have never bought them, but I would assume some theaters/theater groups sell gift certificates; and there are groups he can sign up for that offer discount prices on certain shows/certain nights like theatremania.com, etc. -

TDF (Theatre Development fund) is a great philanthropic organization you could sign him up for; they offer discount prices to theatre and music events. We usually pay about half the ticket price or less. Web site is TDF.org. and the cost is only about $30 a year or so. Another site is AudienceExtras.com. You pay about $100 a year and are then offered tickets to Broadway shows for $3.00. (yes, three dollars!)

you could go on line and buy tickets to the empire state or the new top of the rockefellar center. or circle line for a boat tour around manhattan or to the statue of liberty -which i've always figured is a must see for every american if possible. those gift cards for starbucks/dunkin donuts sound super.
