NYC for July 4th?
 

My mom would like to go to NYC for July 4th this year but i dont think my elderly (somewhat impatient) dad could handle the crowds at a fireworks viewing...
Any suggestion for a hotel to stay at where there might be access to a balcony, etc for fireworks viewing?
The budget ISNT unlimited but I understand I will probably have to fork over a few hundred a night. A budget option IS great, too, though.
If anyone has ANY suggestions it would be GREATLY appreciated.

The crowds are horrendous for the fireworks, however, you have a good idea of a hotel room that might overlook them. I cant, off the top of my head, remember any hotels around there, but I know you want to find one that overlooks the East River near the UN because that is where the fireworks are displayed. Maybe call some random chains and ask them if they have any hotels located in that area.

I would think the Bentley (60's and York) might fit the bill. It's a little further north, but is a high building, so you might be able to see. Another choice is the Marriott in Brooklyn. You should call either hotel before you book to see if they have a view of the fireworks.

One last suggestion might be to make a reservation for dinner at the River Cafe or the Water Club. Actually, Water Club *might* be closed since the FDR is closed, but it's worth a shot.

Keep in mind that, just because a hotel or building has a view of the river doesn't mean you can see the fireworks. One year, we trekked downtown to a friend's rooftop. He was just a couple of blocks from the downtown fireworks and it seemed perfect. There was only one building obstructing just a sliver of an otherwishe 360 degree view. Guess where the fireworks were, though? You guessed it -- DIRECTLY behind that one building!! We went downstairs and watched it on TV. Very disappointing.

Oh yeah, duh, the UN Plaza might be another choice or the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza on 42nd Street or even the Helmsley Hotel (the one on 42nd near 2nd Ave). If you had a room high enough up, you should get a view.

And still open to any suggestions if anyone thinks of any!!
